Laz Alonso Teases Tsu’tey Tribute In Avatar: Fire And Ash

Laz Alonso hinted that the upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will have a special moment for fans of his character, Tsu’tey. Alonso originally played the Na’vi warrior in the first Avatar movie, where Tsu’tey initially clashed with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington). They eventually teamed up to protect Pandora from the RDA, but sadly, Tsu’tey died in the fight.

After celebrating the world premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Alonso shared red carpet photos and hinted at a special surprise for fans of the character Tsu’tey, finishing his post with a winking emoji and the hashtag #Tsu’Tey.

He called the premiere a “full circle moment” and praised Fire and Ash as a “beautiful, suspenseful, and heartfelt film.” He recommends everyone see the sequel when it arrives in theaters on December 19. See Alonso’s post and photos from the event below.

Based on what Alonso said, it’s very unlikely he’s secretly in the cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash, or that the movie will bring back the character Tsu’tey, who previously died. His mention of “a little treat” suggests there will be a respectful nod or Easter egg to remember Tsu’tey instead.

Though we haven’t seen Tsu’tey since the first Avatar film in 2009, he still holds a significant place in the story. He was key to Jake learning about Pandora and the Na’vi, particularly the Omatikaya clan. While Jake and Neytiri have grown and changed since Tsu’tey attempted to separate them, he remains an important figure in how their relationship developed.

It’s fitting to honor Tsu’tey, as James Cameron describes Fire and Ash as the end of the story arc that started with the first Avatar film. While Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will continue the franchise, they’ll essentially be a new saga. Because of this, recognizing Tsu’tey’s importance is crucial as this initial story line concludes – a story he played a key role in beginning.

Since his breakout role in Avatar, Alonso has worked on many different film and TV projects, but he’s become best known for playing Mother’s Milk in the popular Prime Video series The Boys. Even though it’s been nearly twenty years since he played Tsu’tey, Alonso still loves the character and the Avatar franchise, and he’s already a fan of the new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash.
