The sci-fi show Doctor Who, which recently celebrated its 62nd anniversary after nearly 1000 episodes since its 1963 debut, is known for leaving some questions unanswered. A fan theory may have finally solved a mystery that’s puzzled viewers for 17 years, potentially stemming from a particularly memorable two-part story featuring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. These episodes, titled “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead,” originally aired in 2008 as part of season 3.
River Song, played by Alex Kingston, was introduced to Doctor Who in the episodes “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead.” Her character is an archaeologist and time traveler who has a complex relationship with the Doctor, meeting him at different points in his life – sometimes out of order – and eventually becoming his wife. In her first appearance, she recognized the Doctor but noted he looked young, which was puzzling since it was the only time she encountered the Tenth Doctor. Recently, a fan named Jay Raeburn proposed a new idea on Facebook: River Song might have secretly met the Fourteenth Doctor at some point.
How River Song and the Fourteenth Doctor Could Have Crossed Paths in Doctor Who
River Song’s story arc concluded with the episodes “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead,” continuing after her long night with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) on Darillium, as seen in “The Husbands of River Song.” However, this was actually the Doctor’s first encounter with River Song, and since the Tenth Doctor never met her on screen, it’s unclear how she would have known him. It’s possible they met off-screen, and they even appeared together in a series of audio adventures in 2020.
It’s exciting to think about what might have happened if the Fourteenth Doctor had met River Song again, especially since he briefly looked like his tenth self. After the chaotic events of “The Power of the Doctor” and his unusual regeneration, seeing River Song could have helped the Doctor get his bearings. We know he had some time between regenerating and meeting Donna Noble in London, so it’s possible he could have sought out River Song for a sense of familiarity.
River Song encountering the Fourteenth Doctor would explain her familiarity with David Tennant’s face and why she commented on it appearing younger in earlier episodes like “Silence of the Library” and “Forest of the Dead.” While the Fourteenth Doctor has the same face as before, he naturally looks older after nearly twenty years. Though this idea might not be shown on the show, and could seem like a stretch, many fans would enjoy seeing River Song return to Doctor Who, and this theory offers a compelling reason to bring her back repeatedly.
