Jeremy Clarkson questions whether there’s a real secret weapon for The Traitors’ huge success

Okay, so Jeremy Clarkson‘s been stirring up some trouble, and it’s all about The Traitors. He’s basically wondering how much of the show is genuine and how much is, well, staged for TV. It’s got people talking, that’s for sure, and I have to admit, it makes you think! Is it all real betrayal and deception, or is there a bit of a script going on behind the scenes? It’s a valid question, and Clarkson isn’t afraid to ask it.

The former Top Gear host, who said he really enjoys the show and called it fantastic, seemed to wonder if the producers were manipulating events on The Traitors.

Look, after working in TV for three decades, I’ve learned a thing or two. What always struck me is that no one wants to risk a huge amount of money on a show that might completely flop. It just doesn’t happen. They’re always careful with the budget, you know?

“So, I’ve no idea how they’re doing it, but I bow down to them.”

He expressed disbelief, questioning if what he was seeing was genuine. He pointed out that television often relies on clever editing, suggesting the effect might be achieved through meticulous post-production work rather than being real.

When asked if the show might be secretly controlled by producers, he replied, “It’s almost certain they are, and I say that not as someone who’s always negative, but because I understand how television production works.”

“You can’t actually say to a contestant, ‘Say this’ and ‘say that’, you can’t but…”

Clarkson has explained his previous remarks in a post on X, stating that the show’s editors are the ones who truly make it successful.

Wow, I’ve seen some chatter online claiming he thinks ‘Traitors’ is fake, but that’s totally not what he meant! He actually said he’s incredibly impressed by the people who put it together – he really looks up to them.

Studio Lambert has addressed Jeremy Clarkson’s statements, clarifying that they generally allow producers a lot of creative freedom and don’t interfere much with the show’s production.

As a huge fan of The Traitors US, I found it really interesting to hear from Sam Rees-Jones, who’s in charge of the show. He explained that they deliberately keep their involvement to a minimum. They set up the game, establish the rules, and then pretty much let the contestants run with it. They don’t step in to suggest who people should talk to or try to influence things in any way – they want the game to play out naturally and authentically, without any interference from the producers.

Clarkson’s comments follow the announcement that a new season of The Traitors – the version featuring regular people, not celebrities – will premiere on New Year’s Day.

Building on the incredible popularity of the first season, which featured celebrities and attracted over 15 million viewers, comedian Alan Carr was named the winner.

The Celebrity Traitors is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
