Comics based on existing brands – like toys or other franchises – can be difficult to get right. It’s a challenge to stay true to what fans love while also adding something new and original. IDW’s new miniseries, Monster High: Boomuda Triangle, does this by expanding the world of Monster High, following the adventures of Kieran Valentine and Spelldon, characters who were first featured in the Monster High Pride Special earlier this year.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this pairing – they’re seriously adorable! And the series definitely could be something special. But honestly, the first issue felt a little rough around the edges. It definitely lays the groundwork for a big, multiverse-spanning adventure, and there’s a lot of room for things to develop over the five issues. Still, I think only the biggest Monster High fans will really grab onto it right away.

Monster High: Boomuda Triangle #1 Has a Lot Going On (And Not in the Best Way)

The biggest issue with Monster High: Boomuda Triangle #1 is that it throws you right into the action. If you’re not already familiar with the Monster High world, these characters, or even just need a quick reminder, you might find it confusing. The story immediately focuses on Spell preparing for a summer internship in the Boomuda Triangle, while her boyfriend, Val, worries about their relationship. The first few pages are dedicated to their conversation, and while it’s interrupted by a surprising (but cute!) appearance of flying raccoons, it requires some pre-existing knowledge to fully understand what’s happening.
The first few pages establish the overall mood and pace of the story. For much of the issue, the focus is on Val’s anxieties about Spell’s internship, which then causes Spell stress. This dynamic takes up a lot of space before the main plot of the miniseries truly begins, and when the central conflict finally arrives, it feels hurried. It’s also difficult to understand how the story will explore both Spell and Val working through their personal insecurities, because it initially portrays Val’s issues as far more significant, almost to a damaging degree.
The Premise, However, Has Promise
Even though the beginning feels a little strange and the relationship between the characters is complicated, the first issue of Monster High: Boomuda Triangle introduces a really exciting storyline. Something happens in the Boomuda Triangle that causes universes to collide and merge. The issue ends with Spell waking up to find another version of himself from a different universe, suggesting he and Val will have to work together to both fix their relationship and save everything. That sets up a potentially huge and complicated adventure, especially when you mix the supernatural with a multiverse! It’s a great place to end this part of the story and leave readers wanting more.
The artwork in this issue is beautiful. Eileen Widjaja’s style is very expressive, and the flying raccoons are especially cute! The book’s colors are also amazing – Bex Glendining did a great job overall, with the purple and green shades being particularly striking. Even with its supernatural and spooky elements, it’s a very colorful and visually appealing book.
Overall, Monster High: Boomuda Triangle #1 is best suited for dedicated fans of the series. While it has a slow start, uneven pacing, and could be more concise, the first issue introduces an interesting story idea. If the rest of the series builds on this foundation, it could become a really enjoyable adventure exploring different worlds and the challenges of love and redemption.
