Superman Gets Shocking New Look & Powers as DC Hero Unleashes Final Form

Okay, so the first round of the DC K.O. tournament is done, and we’re left with 16 heroes and villains battling it out for Darkseid’s power and the title of King Omega. As a long-time Superman fan, I have to say, this whole thing feels…off. Superman’s always had that line he won’t cross – no killing – and this tournament seems designed to push him right up to it. In fact, in DC K.O.: Superman vs. Captain Atom #1, we see him tested like never before, forced to confront limits he didn’t even know he had. It’s a really compelling setup, and honestly, a bit unsettling to watch him struggle with this.

DC K.O.: Superman vs. Captain Atom #1, written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Sean Izaakse, focuses on a competition between the two heroes. The contest is a straightforward fight, where the first to win two out of three rounds advances.

As a film fan, I’ve always found Captain Atom a fascinating matchup against Superman. He’s one of the few heroes who actually could harm the Man of Steel! He’s got these incredible energy powers, and he can even create radiation signatures that mimic things like Kryptonite or red sun radiation – Superman’s big weaknesses. What’s even more dangerous is he can actually drain Superman’s solar energy. Honestly, all that would probably let Captain Atom win the first round pretty easily.

The second round adds a new twist: each hero can transform into a future version of themselves. Captain Atom becomes Monarch, a powerful and ruthless future self. Superman, however, chooses Superman-Prime, a vastly powerful version of himself from the distant future of the DC One Million storyline.

How Superman just became even more powerful

Superman-Prime appears to be made of living gold and is almost unbeatable after spending centuries within Earth’s sun. However, Superman ultimately returns to his normal form, worried about being overwhelmed by such immense power. Meanwhile, Captain Atom attempts to gather the strength from all his past selves and confronts the entity controlling the competition, known as the Heart of Apokolips.

After either being penalized for a rule break or as a consequence of a powerful surge, Superman unexpectedly gains Captain Atom’s abilities. This newfound power allows him to triumph in the final battle and might even make him immune to his usual weaknesses. He could now withstand Kryptonite radiation and absorb energy from any kind of starlight, not just yellow sunlight. With magic as a possible exception, very little seems capable of harming Superman now.

DC K.O.: Superman vs. Captain Atom #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
