Fire and Ash To End 1st Avatar Saga Like MCU’s Spider-Man Sequel

James Cameron recently shared that the Avatar movies will be structured similarly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s approach with its big story arcs. He explained that “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will conclude the first major story arc for the Avatar franchise, and the following film, “Avatar 4,” will kick off a brand new one. This is comparable to how Marvel ended its Infinity Saga and then began the Multiverse Saga with separate films.

Avatar 4 will begin a new saga if it happens

James Cameron recently told iO9 that movie sequels need to truly impress audiences by offering something fresh and unexpected. He doesn’t see Avatar: Fire and Ash as a typical sequel, but rather as the exciting conclusion to a long-running story. (Gizmodo)

He prefers the term ‘saga’ over ‘sequel’ because the core story structure was established from the beginning. He believes framing it as the third act of a larger narrative is a more positive approach.

Cameron described ‘Fire and Ash’ as unlike typical Hollywood sequels. He explained that he’d been carefully planning this film and its earlier installments over a long period, a different approach than studios usually taking – waiting for a movie to succeed financially before approving a sequel and then searching for a script. He intentionally approached the project with a long-term vision, hoping audiences would connect with the characters. He emphasized that despite their fantastical appearance – being ten feet tall and blue – the Na’vi are fundamentally relatable people.

James Cameron, the director of Titanic, explained that if Avatar 4 and 5 are made, they’ll tell a complete, self-contained story. He said these two movies have a defined beginning, middle, and end, but currently, they are just ideas with no confirmed production.

At the D23 Expo in September 2022, James Cameron shared that work on Avatar 4 had begun. He later told Variety that he’d already filmed some scenes, because the younger characters will age significantly in the movie. He plans to finish filming after the release of ‘Avatar 3’, currently titled ‘Fire and Ash’.
