As a big period drama fan, I was really missing Downton Abbey when it ended, but I think I’ve found a new favorite with Victoria on Netflix! It’s good timing, honestly, because the Downton Abbey movies are officially over now. They just released the third one, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, after the first film in 2019 and the sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, in 2022.
After the popular series Downton Abbey concluded in 2015, these films allowed fans to continue following the beloved characters. The show beautifully depicted the lives of the Crawley family and their staff, showcasing their romances, hardships, and the significant events of the time. Luckily, there’s a similar, high-quality historical drama available to watch on Netflix.
Jenna Coleman’s Victoria Is Now Available On Netflix (& It’s Already Trending)
Though the PBS series Victoria, which ran from 2016 to 2019, didn’t draw as many viewers as Downton Abbey, it’s now gaining popularity. Since arriving on Netflix on December 1st, Victoria, starring Jenna Coleman, has quickly made it into the platform’s Top 10.
Jenna Coleman stars as Queen Victoria in the series, which starts with her becoming queen and follows her years on the throne. The show also heavily features Victoria’s love life, including her attraction to her advisor, Lord Melbourne (played by Rufus Sewell), and her marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes).
Similar to Downton Abbey, Victoria portrays actual historical events, including the repeal of the Corn Laws and the Irish Potato Famine. While some history buffs might find minor inaccuracies, viewers who enjoy period dramas with a contemporary feel—such as the pressure on Victoria to marry and submit to a husband’s authority—will likely be captivated by the show.

Good historical dramas need to look the part, and Downton Abbey certainly did. Luckily, Victoria is just as impressive. The first season cost around £10 million to make (according to The Standard), which is relatively low when you consider how lavish the costumes and sets were.
Beyond their beautiful settings, both Downton Abbey and Victoria focus just as much on the personal relationships and struggles of their characters as they do on the history of the time. Both shows prominently feature the impact of social rules and class differences. While Victoria doesn’t have as large a cast as Downton, the stories of its servants are just as compelling as those of the royal family.
If you were a fan of Lady Mary from Downton Abbey, you’ll likely enjoy Victoria as well. Both characters navigate the challenges of being strong women in a world run by men, and they’re expected to do so with elegance and poise.
Despite being about a British queen who ruled for a long time, the show Victoria and its main character feel surprisingly down-to-earth. It’s much more similar in tone to Downton Abbey than the more formal and distant The Crown. If you enjoyed the Crawley family and their servants, you’ll likely love this series starring Jenna Coleman.
