One of the Biggest Horror Franchises of the 2000s Is Finally Returning (With a Master of the Genre Joining)

Over the past few decades, we’ve seen some truly memorable horror franchises, and Blumhouse and Paramount have produced many of them. One particularly popular franchise hasn’t had a new movie in years, despite being a box office and fan favorite in the 2000s. Fortunately, it’s making a comeback, and it’s being led by a highly respected horror director – a combination that could revitalize the series.

A new Paranormal Activity movie is in the works, and James Wan – known for directing successful horror franchises like The Conjuring and Insidious – will be directing (according to The Hollywood Reporter). He’s bringing his horror expertise to revive this popular series from the 2000s.

Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, has joined forces with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse. Together, they’re partnering with Paramount to fund and create a new film, which Paramount will then release in theaters. Oren Peli, who was involved in the original films, is returning as a producer, alongside Blum. All three companies – Paramount, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster – are making this movie a top priority and are fully committed to its success.

It’s easy to see why they’re revisiting the series – the first Paranormal Activity movie was made for just $15,000 but earned over $194 million in theaters. There have been seven Paranormal Activity films so far, the most recent being Next of Kin in 2021. While details are limited, producer Jason Blum has hinted that the new film will be a fresh start for the franchise, suggesting a return to the simple, effective style of the original.

Wan expressed his longtime appreciation for the Paranormal Activity films, particularly the original’s masterful use of suspense and ability to create fear through what isn’t shown. He’s excited to build on the franchise’s history and contribute to its future direction as a scary, found-footage series.

Blum is thrilled to be working with James on the revival of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise, a project they envisioned when Blumhouse merged with Atomic Monster. He plans to be heavily involved in launching this new installment. While the budget has increased from the original $15,000, the filmmakers intend to maintain the same level of suspense and strongly advise viewers not to watch it alone. They’re excited to collaborate with Josh Greenstein, Dana Goldberg, David Ellison, Jeff Shell, and their teams at Paramount to bring the series back.

As a horror fan, I’m genuinely excited about Paramount’s plan to bring back Paranormal Activity. The studio heads, Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, have tapped the incredibly talented James and Jason to spearhead this reboot, and I think it’s a brilliant move. Jason clearly understands what made the original films so effective, and James consistently delivers fresh, inventive stories. Together, they’re setting the stage for what promises to be a truly terrifying and compelling new installment in the franchise.

The new Paranormal Activity doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
