It’s been a year since the release of Absolute Batman, and this new version of the hero has already battled some incredibly tough enemies. The series takes place in the Absolute Universe, a world heavily influenced by Darkseid where villains are stronger and heroes face bigger obstacles. This Bruce Wayne doesn’t have the wealth or resources of his familiar counterpart, forcing him to find new ways to protect Gotham. The villains in this universe are also more powerful than those in the main Batman stories, making his job even harder.
Over the past year, the Absolute Batman comic series has dramatically changed many of Batman’s classic enemies. Villains like Black Mask and the Joker are now more powerful and have greater control over Gotham. Even more frightening, some, like Mr. Freeze and Bane, have been transformed into terrifying monsters. While you’ll recognize these villains, each one has been uniquely reimagined. Here are 5 examples of how Absolute Batman has reinvented them in surprising ways.
5. Black Mask

Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, is consistently one of Batman’s most disturbing villains. However, he’s become even more dangerous. Now, Black Mask commands the Party Animals – a network of gangs he uses globally to create chaos, allowing the wealthy to benefit from the resulting turmoil. In this version of the story, Sionis isn’t just a typical crime boss; he leads a formidable force specializing in destruction, torture, and killing. Black Mask shows no restraint and ultimately reveals just how harsh and unforgiving this universe truly is to Bruce Wayne.
4. Killer Croc

Waylon Jones is different from the other villains—he used to be a childhood friend of Absolute Batman. However, he was subjected to a secret experiment in Ark M that turned him into a massive, crocodile-like creature. While the original Killer Croc has become increasingly savage over time, this ‘Absolute’ version is a truly terrifying monster, with jaws strong enough to bite off pieces of even someone as powerful as Bane. Surprisingly, Waylon’s mind remains, and he continues to assist Absolute Batman whenever possible.
3. Mister Freeze

This universe’s version of Mister Freeze isn’t the original, Victor Fries, but his son, Victor Jr., who owns a cryogenics business. As a child, Victor Jr. was critically ill and put into cryo-sleep with the hope that an ancient bacterium would heal him. The treatment worked, but it also drastically changed his body, giving him incredible flexibility, strength, endurance, and speed. He was the first villain to genuinely surprise and overwhelm Batman, forcing Bruce Wayne to withdraw during their initial confrontation.
2. Bane

Ever since his debut, people have commented on Bane’s impressive size. Interestingly, he’s already incredibly powerful even without using the Venom that’s usually his signature. But when he does use it, he grows to a massive fifteen feet tall. This version of Venom also makes Bane smarter and better at thinking during a fight. Although he didn’t manage to break Batman’s back, he came very close to shattering Bruce Wayne’s will. So far, Bane has proven to be the biggest challenge Bruce has ever faced.
1. Joker

The Absolute Universe Joker is just as enigmatic as the Joker we know from the main DC Universe. However, in this reality, he’s one of the wealthiest people on the planet, controlling a massive company called J.K. Holdings. He uses this corporation to finance his private prison system, known as the Arks. Despite never laughing, this Joker is equally disturbed and malicious, leveraging his fortune to control and harm people worldwide. He also conceals a terrifying true form – revealed on the cover of Absolute Batman #15 – which presents a unique and currently insurmountable challenge for Bruce Wayne.
