With the massive success of franchises like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, Hollywood was eager to find the next big fantasy hit in the 2000s. While high fantasy hadn’t yet made a splash on television, studios focused on bringing these stories to the big screen. Fox even tried in 2006 to launch a rival franchise, but it didn’t take off. Unfortunately, many of these attempts, including films like The Golden Compass and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, didn’t achieve the success studios were hoping for.
Fox once hoped a big-budget fantasy film would launch a major franchise, rivaling the success of series like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Those franchises already had devoted fans and were incredibly popular, making it a difficult goal. Unfortunately, the film didn’t meet expectations and was poorly received by critics, ending any plans for sequels. However, there’s a possibility it could get a second chance on screen soon.
Fox’s Eragon Movie Was Supposed to Rival Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings

Released in 2006, Eragon was part of a wave of fantasy films based on popular books from the 2000s. It adapted Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle, a bestselling young adult series known for its detailed stories and imaginative world. The story of a boy who finds and connects with a dragon seemed particularly promising, building on the success of franchises like Harry Potter, which also featured a young hero in an unusual situation. This demand for similar stories led to several adaptations of popular young adult novels, including Eragon, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and His Dark Materials.
The movie Eragon was intended to launch a successful film series for Fox, but it didn’t quite work out. While the studio had the right idea in adapting the popular books, the 2006 film failed to capture the same wonder and success as franchises like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Financially, the movie wasn’t a total disaster – it earned around $250 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, making it slightly profitable even after marketing. However, critics and audiences didn’t respond well. With a 15% critic score and 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the negative reception ended any possibility of sequels and Fox’s plans for a franchise.
Why the Eragon Movie Failed

The Eragon movie didn’t succeed because it failed to capture the magic of the book. While dragon stories are challenging to bring to the screen, the visual effects weren’t quite convincing enough for the time. More importantly, the film didn’t effectively show the strong connection between Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, and the short runtime didn’t give audiences enough time to truly connect with the characters, which ultimately lessened the emotional impact.
The movie also made changes to the original story, even altering the ending. This made book fans worried that the adaptation wouldn’t stay true to the source material and turned many of them away. Because both general audiences and dedicated readers were left unsatisfied, Eragon failed to connect with the groups it needed to succeed. A new version planned for Disney+ might offer a fresh start, though.
Disney’s Eragon Reboot Gives the Series Another Chance On-Screen

Although the 2006 Eragon movie wasn’t well-received, fans still hope to see Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle adapted into a successful film or TV series. Disney announced plans for a new adaptation in 2022, which sparked excitement, but there haven’t been many updates since then. With other successful remakes happening, a TV show seems like a promising way to finally bring the full story to life, something the original movie didn’t achieve.
We’re seeing a trend of book adaptations finding more success on TV than in movies. Disney’s new Percy Jackson & the Olympians series is a good example – they’re carefully adapting Rick Riordan’s books after the earlier films didn’t quite capture the story. The longer format of TV allows for a more complete adaptation, which is also why HBO’s His Dark Materials was more successful than the single The Golden Compass movie. HBO Max is now trying this with Harry Potter, a challenge because of the popular films. Hollywood is learning that fantasy book series are often better suited for television. If Disney moves forward with an Eragon series, it could be another example of a story getting a better adaptation the second time around, especially since the 2006 movie provides a clear idea of what didn’t work before.
