The Phoenix Force is an incredibly ancient cosmic entity, with hosts on Earth dating back over a million years. While many have been connected to it, Jean Grey is the most well-known and prominently featured host in Marvel Comics. The Phoenix Force is a fundamental force of the universe, representing light and rebirth. Like Galactus consumes worlds, the Phoenix destroys them to allow for new beginnings. However, this process is often seen as destructive and corrupting, leading to conflict with civilizations that view the Phoenix as a dangerous force.
Here’s a ranking of the most powerful characters who’ve wielded the Phoenix Force, from Jean Grey to other heroes and villains.
10) Hope Summers

Hope Summers is a unique mutant, born after the event known as M-Day. Depending on the timeline, she’s been seen as either a savior of mutants – the ‘Mutant Messiah’ – or tragically, as the catalyst for a massive human-led genocide of mutants, falsely blamed for numerous human deaths. Her origins are tied to the Phoenix Force, as her mother was impregnated by it, and Hope later wielded the power of the White Phoenix to restore the mutant population after M-Day. During the final days of the Krakoa era, Hope sacrificed herself to help the Phoenix Force renew its power within the White Hot Room.
9) Magik

During the Avengers vs. X-Men event, Magik became one of the mutants empowered by the Phoenix Force, joining Colossus, Emma Frost, and Namor as part of the Phoenix Five. She was the third most powerful of these individuals, thanks to a unique combination of her mutant abilities and her skills as a powerful magician – she’s the Sorcerer Supreme of the Limbo dimension. While incredibly strong and a serious threat, Magik’s own rage ultimately led to her downfall, causing her to lose control and relinquish the Phoenix Force after being provoked by Spider-Man.
8) Thane

Thane is the Inhuman son of Thanos, inheriting immense power from his father. He became even stronger by tapping into the Black Vortex, which unleashed his full abilities. When he lost that power, he bonded with the Phoenix Force, searching for a Phoenix Egg to amplify it. Nebula killed him to prevent him from obtaining the egg, but the egg hatched anyway, bringing him back to life and making him its new host. Later, Death itself used Thane to spread destruction throughout the universe with nearly god-like power, until he was ultimately defeated in the God Quarry.
7) Wolverine

A 2010 Marvel comic series called Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine sent the two heroes on a journey through time. During their travels, Wolverine unexpectedly became the new Dark Phoenix. This happened after a battle with Doom the Living Planet, where the only weapon capable of defeating him was the Phoenix Gun. Wolverine used the gun, seemingly sacrificing himself, but Spider-Man brought him back to life using a Cosmic Cube. However, when Wolverine revived, he was now host to the Phoenix Force, forcing Spider-Man to fight and ultimately help him control and release the immense power.
6) Echo

The ‘Enter the Phoenix’ storyline revolved around the Phoenix Force returning to Earth to find a new host. This led to a battle between many of Earth’s most powerful heroes to see who was worthy. Surprisingly, Namor won, defeating Echo and leaving her for dead. However, the Phoenix Force was drawn to Echo’s pain and instead chose her as its next host. Echo ultimately used her newfound powers for good, joining the Avengers and protecting the God Quarry until the Phoenix Force was depleted.
5) Namor

I still can’t believe what Namor did when he became one of the Phoenix Five. Forget Cyclops killing Professor X for a second – Namor caused way more destruction. His old grudge against Black Panther just exploded, and with the Phoenix Force powering him, he completely leveled Wakanda – it was unlike anything that country had ever seen! It was such a terrible attack that Black Panther immediately ended his marriage to Storm, because she was siding with the mutants. Ultimately, it took the full force of the Avengers, fighting in Wakanda, to finally stop him.
4) Firehair

Firehair was the very first host of the Phoenix Force, appearing in the Avengers 1MM BC comic series as one of the original Avengers. A surprising twist revealed a romantic relationship with Odin, and even more surprisingly, that she was the true mother of Thor. This makes Thor the son of the Phoenix, explaining his exceptional power compared to other Asgardians. Her abilities are comparable to those of Jean Grey, a mutant known for her telekinetic and telepathic powers.
3) Cyclops

Cyclops became the strongest of the Phoenix Five because the Phoenix Force transferred to the remaining members each time someone was defeated. As the last one left, Cyclops absorbed the full power of the Phoenix Force. Tragically, when Professor X tried to reason with him, Cyclops killed his mentor using its immense power. It ultimately took the combined abilities of Hope Summers and Scarlet Witch to remove the Phoenix Force from Cyclops and redistribute its energy, reigniting mutant powers across the planet.
2) Rachel Summers

As a huge X-Men fan, I’m always fascinated by Rachel Summers! She’s the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey from another reality, and like her mom, she’s incredibly psychic. But that’s not all – she actually has a piece of the Phoenix Force inside her! It’s what brought her to our world to help the X-Men. What’s really mind-blowing is that she once became the sole host of the Phoenix, becoming unbelievably powerful – powerful enough to even challenge the Beyonder! She almost completely remade the universe because of it, trying to erase the Beyonder, but thankfully Storm was able to talk her down. It just goes to show how immense her Phoenix-fueled powers truly are!
1) Jean Grey

I’ve always been fascinated by Jean Grey. She’s not just powerful, she is the most connected host to the incredible Phoenix Force in the entire Marvel Universe, as far as I’m concerned. She was the very first to wield its power, and while others have since, she’s become the Phoenix multiple times over. It’s amazing – and tragic – how often she’s died, only to be resurrected thanks to the Force itself. As an Omega-level mutant and arguably the greatest telepath around, she’s already extraordinary, but with the Phoenix, she can travel between stars, control cosmic fire, even bring people back from the dead! It’s terrifying to think about, but in one alternate reality, she actually destroyed Earth, showing just how much of a threat she could be if she ever lost control. She truly is something special.
