Another Major Avenger Confirmed To Survive Doomsday & Return In Secret Wars

Marvel Studios is preparing for the epic finale of the Multiverse Saga with the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday. In a welcome return, directors Joe and Anthony Russo – who previously helmed the blockbuster hits Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame – are at the helm. Adding to the excitement, Robert Downey Jr. will be back as the main villain, Doctor Doom. The movie will feature a huge cast, bringing together classic Avengers, newer heroes, and characters from the X-Men. However, Doomsday is just the first part of a two-movie conclusion, which will finish with Avengers: Secret Wars.

Since the two movies are heavily connected, Marvel has been very careful about revealing who’s in the second film. Announcing an actor for the sequel would essentially reveal whether their character survives the first one. Despite the studio’s efforts to keep things under wraps, a well-known actor might have accidentally revealed a major plot point during a recent interview.

Letitia Wright, while promoting her new movie Highway to the Moon, talked about her role as Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with ScreenRant. When asked about Black Panther 3, she initially said they had just finished filming Secret Wars, but quickly corrected herself, stating it was actually Doomsday. She clarified that Secret Wars is the next project she’ll be working on. This mix-up is the first official confirmation that Shuri will be a key character in the upcoming two-part finale of the Marvel saga.

Shuri Is Not the First Marvel Character Confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars

While Marvel Studios has been keeping details under wraps, Shuri is now confirmed to be in Avengers: Secret Wars, joining a growing cast. The biggest news is Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom. Marvel officially announced this at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, with Kevin Feige stating Downey will play the villain in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Facing off against Doctor Doom will be the current Captain America, Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie. Mackie recently shared that he’ll start filming Secret Wars next year, once he finishes work on the first movie in the series.

The upcoming Secret Wars movie will include the Fantastic Four. After being introduced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the team will immediately join the larger Avengers storyline. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach have all been confirmed to play Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm, respectively, in both Avengers films. This is especially noteworthy because the Secret Wars comic books heavily feature the long-standing conflict between Reed Richards and Doctor Doom.

The team for the upcoming Secret Wars event will also feature Sadie Sink, who is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Although details about her character are being kept secret, her appearance in the final installment of the saga hints that she’ll be a powerful and important figure in the MCU’s future.

I’m so excited! I just heard that Avengers: Doomsday is coming to theaters on December 18, 2026, and then Avengers: Secret Wars will be right behind it on December 17, 2027. It feels like forever away, but I’m already counting down the days!
