New Horror Anime Announced For 2026 (And It’s Not Junji Ito)

Junji Ito is famous for horror anime, but many other creators work in the genre. While anime doesn’t get as many horror releases as action, romance, or comedy, there’s a strong demand for scary stories. A new anime series, coming in 2026, will adapt the works of Norio Tsuruta and Midori Sato, telling the story of a boy searching for ghosts and goblins throughout the countryside. Ito might have some competition soon!

Originally published as a series of novels in 2015, Horror Collector is a collection of interconnected spooky tales centered around a character named Fushigi Chino. The story follows a young protagonist traveling across Japan, seeking out local legends and scary stories. The novels describe a world where online creepypastas and urban myths might actually be true, and those who stumble upon the truth often face danger. However, there’s a rumor of a boy in a red hood who appears wherever strange events happen, offering a potential glimmer of hope—or perhaps proving the legends are terrifyingly real. NHK recently announced an anime adaptation of the series, promising to bring these chilling stories to life next year.

The Horror Collector is Coming

I was really excited to hear that “The Horror Collector” is getting an anime adaptation in 2026, and co-creator Midori Sato seems thrilled too! She’s hoping both fans of the original story and newcomers will enjoy it, saying it’s perfect for anyone who likes spooky tales or urban legends. Even though it started as a novel for kids, she believes adults will find it both scary and fun, and encourages everyone to follow Chino Fushigi’s adventures when it airs.

Norio Tsuruta, who co-created the series with Sato, also expressed his excitement about the adaptation. He explained that “The Horror Collector” was designed to introduce a compelling character into the world of Japanese horror, which is known for its frightening ghosts like Sadako. They’d always hoped to combine J-horror with anime—two things Japan is famous for worldwide—and NHK has now made that happen. As a pioneer of J-horror, Tsuruta said he couldn’t be more pleased.

Although this show isn’t connected to Junji Ito, the renowned horror artist has another anime anthology coming soon. Similar to this series, Ito’s Crimson will feature several of his chilling stories. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, leaving fans eager to find out which tales will be adapted for animation.
