The recent merger of Skydance and Paramount has brought new leaders to the studio, and they’re now evaluating upcoming films. This includes focusing on successful franchises like Star Trek, and also re-examining projects that were previously approved. Unfortunately, this has led to the cancellation of some films, and sci-fi fans may be saddened to learn that one promising movie is no longer in development at Paramount.
As a big movie fan, I was disappointed to read in The Hollywood Reporter that a few projects at Paramount have been scrapped. Sadly, that Area 51 film with Colin Trevorrow directing and Ryan Reynolds producing isn’t happening anymore. It’s also a shame about the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spin-off, Victor and Sam’s Day Off, and the Eloise adaptation – another one Ryan Reynolds was involved with, actually! They were also planning a romantic sports drama called Winter Games with Miles Teller, but that’s off the table too. Interestingly, Eloise has already been picked up by Netflix, so at least that story might still make it to the screen.
Will Colin Trevorrow’s Area 51 Movie Find a New Home?

Trevorrow’s movie project was just revealed earlier this year. At that time, the only thing known about the plot was that it was set in the 1980s and followed the Las Vegas journalist who first reported on Area 51 (according to Deadline). Although the film hadn’t progressed very far in development, its cancellation is still a letdown. Despite Trevorrow’s somewhat uneven directing history, this Area 51 movie seemed like it could have been a compelling, original film – and a potentially lower-budget one, which is the kind of movie the film industry could really use more of. It had the potential to be both an entertaining sci-fi story and a success without the usual pressure of huge box office expectations. It might even have been a surprise hit.
Paramount is changing its approach to filmmaking, focusing on projects with strong potential for success at the box office. This is why they’re continuing to develop new movies in popular franchises like Star Trek and Sonic the Hedgehog, while shelving projects like the Area 51 film and Victor & Sam’s Day Off. According to a source at The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount’s decisions are now driven primarily by commercial viability. It’s unclear whether any of the cancelled films will be picked up by other studios, but it’s possible that a director like Trevorrow could try to find a new home for his project.
Universal Pictures could be a strong contender to produce the Area 51 movie. Director J.D. Trevorrow previously worked with Universal on the popular Jurassic World films, making a continued partnership likely. Warner Bros. was another possibility, but the recent Netflix acquisition creates uncertainty. The studio’s transition will involve many changes, and it’s possible new leadership will have specific plans for which films to prioritize, much like Paramount.
Having Ryan Reynolds involved boosts the chances for the Area 51 movie, as long as Paramount decides to move forward with it. His production company, Maximum Effort, is relatively new – only seven years old – but has already worked with major companies like Disney, Apple, Netflix, and Amazon. If the studio thinks the movie is too risky for theaters right now, a streaming service might still be interested. We’ve seen similar genre films succeed by going straight to streaming – Apple’s The Gorge was a recent example – so it’s definitely a possibility.
