The popular 2000s show Malcolm in the Middle is returning! Hulu will release a four-part special called Life’s Still Unfair, bringing back the original cast for more of the show’s signature funny and unpredictable moments.
Hulu just dropped the first teaser for the Malcolm in the Middle revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair. The teaser shows someone getting their back shaved, a nod to the original show’s opening sequence featuring Bryan Cranston. It’s been almost 20 years since viewers last saw the Heffernan family, and the new series is scheduled to stream on Disney+ in 2026, though an exact release date hasn’t been announced.
Some characters are being recast, including Dewey, who was originally played by Erik Per Sullivan. He’s been replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark because Sullivan is now focused on his education – he’s pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard and stopped acting back in 2010.
Sadly, Kenneth Mars, who famously played Otto, passed away in 2011 and won’t be appearing in the show’s revival.
Frankie Muniz, who starred as Malcolm in the original series, is returning for a revival of Malcolm in the Middle. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will also reprise their roles as Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois. The revival will consist of four 30-minute episodes, and filming is expected to wrap up in May. Disney is considering extending the series if these episodes are well-received.
In an interview with Joe Vulpis, Muniz shared his thoughts on the upcoming revival:
Viewers will likely be surprised by where the story picks up and who’s involved. It was a challenge condensing twenty years’ worth of events into just four half-hour episodes, but I believe audiences will really enjoy how it all turned out.
The initial series was a huge hit, lasting over 150 episodes and winning seven Emmy Awards, including awards for directing and writing. Linwood Boomer, who created and ran the original show, wrote all four episodes of the new Disney version.
