The enigmatic Absolute Joker has remained a mysterious figure since he first appeared. Despite being a wealthy man ironically named for his lack of humor, he’s been connected to almost every villainous act in the Absolute Batman storyline. Until now, his motivations beyond making money and his background have remained a secret.
Absolute Batman #15, written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock, delves deep into the story of the Joker. This issue reveals how the Joker secretly funded Ark M, the prison/laboratory, and provided financial support to dangerous terrorists like Bane and Black Mask. The series has shown that the Joker was the hidden source of funding for these operations.
I’ve always been fascinated by how Alfred Pennyworth operates, and his involvement in this case is just incredible. He noticed something was off with all the trouble being caused and started digging into the finances behind it – trying to figure out why someone with so much money would want to create such chaos. It’s in Absolute Batman #15 where we first see him sharing what he’s discovered about the Absolute Joker and his history with Bruce, and honestly, it’s a really compelling start to understanding the villain’s motives.
The first eight pages of Absolute Batman #15 may be viewed below.

What is Absolute Joker’s origin?
Records show that the man known as Absolute Joker is actually Joseph Grimm V. He comes from a wealthy Gotham family that’s been successful since the late 1800s. Each Joseph Grimm in the family has built on their fortune through different parts of the entertainment business.
The Grimm family built a successful entertainment empire over five generations. It began with Joseph Grimm I, who transitioned from performing as a clown to owning and producing theater shows. His son, Jack Grimm Jr., then expanded the business into film and television. Jack Grimm III was an early innovator in cable TV, and his son, Jack Grimm IV, found success with video games. Today, Jack Grimm V is on track to become a trillionaire through investments in online gaming and computer hardware.
The Absolute Joker and his family appear respectable, with a well-known history of charitable giving, especially to organizations that help children. However, past events have shown a darker side to the man, and the reasons behind his actions are still unclear.
Absolute Batman #15 arrives in comic shops everywhere on December 10, 2025.
