To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie in 1997, a special edition of the original trilogy was released. These versions included new scenes and updated effects, and George Lucas continued to make changes for later releases, even adding the now-famous line, “maclunkey,” for the Disney+ version. Many of these alterations sparked controversy, especially among fans who loved the original theatrical releases. Unfortunately, the special editions became the standard versions available, effectively becoming the official story. For years, fans have hoped Disney or Lucasfilm would restore the original versions, and now, that wish is finally coming true.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Star Wars: A New Hope will return to cinemas in 2027. The release was originally planned for April, but has been moved to February. Fans will be able to see a newly restored version of the original 1977 theatrical release, according to an announcement on the official Star Wars website.
