I’ve found that superhero stories really shine in strategy games – it’s awesome to see heroes and villains reimagined as unique units you can command. A perfect example is Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Firaxis Games made it, and it came out about three years ago. You play as a magically-powered hero who has to team up with the classic Marvel characters to face off against… well, your demonic mom! Seriously, I’m still hooked on it – it’s easily become one of my go-to strategy games on consoles.

Midnight Suns Is An Addicting (And Surprisingly Difficult) Strategy Game

Midnight Suns is a strategy game that’s simple to pick up but offers a lot of depth. Battles are turn-based and involve using cards to perform actions. While the basic gameplay is consistent across all characters – players have a limited number of moves and card plays each turn – each hero has a unique deck of cards. These decks can be customized to work well with other heroes, and they give each character a distinct style and set of abilities. For example, Spider-Man focuses on quick movements, Magik can teleport, Iron Man unleashes a barrage of attacks, and Captain Marvel deals massive damage.

One of the best parts of the game is experimenting with different team combinations, encouraging players to try new strategies on every mission. The battles themselves can be challenging, particularly as more enemies arrive during tougher levels. To succeed, you’ll need to be creative and use the surroundings, location, and your team’s abilities to your advantage.

It’s incredibly satisfying to carefully plan and execute strategies that defeat waves of enemies, especially when your superheroes unleash their powerful attacks one after another. A standout feature of Midnight Suns is its focus on building relationships between your character and the other heroes. You’ll have many chances to chat with them about everything – from the ethics of their mission to their personal tastes. Players can even start book clubs or explore romantic connections between characters like Blade and Captain Marvel. Getting to know the heroes better not only unlocks their full power in battle, but also helps you become truly invested in the story.

The main story is simple, but it’s surprisingly fun to talk with the different heroes and help them navigate their disagreements. Choosing to support some heroes over others can damage friendships, and you’ll need to offer specific gifts to repair those relationships. This system cleverly captures the complex interactions and relationships that are so important in superhero stories, particularly those from Marvel.

I’m Still Playing Midnight Suns, And I Will Be For A While

When I need to unwind, I always find myself returning to a few favorite games, even with new releases and multiplayer options available. MARVEL SNAP is a major one – I’ve talked about how much I enjoy it before – and Midnight Suns is another. As a longtime Marvel fan who loves deck-building and strategy, both games are a perfect fit for me. MARVEL SNAP is great for quick gaming sessions, while Midnight Suns is what I reach for when I have more time and really want to relax.

I’m constantly challenged by the game’s ongoing missions, and the new DLC – with four extra heroes and enemies – added interesting mechanics to play around with. Midnight Suns is now one of the best strategy games available on consoles, thanks to its simple design that still allows for deep and creative planning. Whether it’s chaining together powerful combos or dramatically kicking enemies off buildings, the game is just as enjoyable today as it was when I first played it, and it’s easily been one of my favorite games in recent years.
