Jujutsu Kaisen Execution Delivers High-Stakes Action and the Most Shocking Twist of the Series (Review)

Witnessing the fallout from the Shibuya Incident was devastating. The entire world of Jujutsu Kaisen felt broken, and all the jujutsu sorcerers in Japan were thrown into a state of fear and uncertainty. With Satoru Gojo gone and so many lives lost in Tokyo, it felt like everything was leading up to the Jujutsu Kaisen Execution film. The movie immediately pulls you in, starting with a really well-done and emotional look back at the Shibuya Incident. It’s a smart move, because it reminds both those who’ve followed the story and newcomers just how much trauma everyone experienced – especially Yuji Itadori – and just how much is on the line now.

Following a brief recap of the Shibuya Incident, the story jumps into the aftermath and how Yuji avoids execution – a deal Gojo made in Season 1. Fans were incredibly excited, especially with the return of powerful sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu, who vowed to personally carry out Yuji’s sentence. Thankfully, the animation studio MAPPA, known for its high-quality work on Jujutsu Kaisen and other popular anime, exceeded all expectations. The resulting film is a fast-paced, emotionally charged, and incredibly intense experience. It works both as a fantastic standalone story and as a thrilling setup for Season 3, which will focus on the Culling Games arc. The way this storyline is handled – both in terms of plot and visual execution – makes it one of the most memorable parts of Jujutsu Kaisen so far.

The Clash of Sorcerers Brings Electrifying Action and High Emotions

The central conflict of the story revolved around the long-awaited fight between Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu, where Yuji had to fight for his life against a powerful sorcerer and a senior student. For viewers who haven’t read the manga, seeing Yuta – a well-established and sympathetic hero, the main character of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and a favorite student of Gojo – fight against Yuji was a major surprise. This confrontation perfectly wrapped up the intense Shibuya Incident, addressed the consequences of Sukuna’s actions while possessing Yuji, and left audiences eager to find out what happens next.

The anime Execution perfectly captured the thrilling, high-energy action of the original manga, and even exceeded expectations. The animation, as you’d expect from MAPPA Studios, was outstanding. Each fight move – every punch, sword swing, and burst of energy – was visually stunning, especially the clash between Yuta’s purple and Yuji’s blue energy. The action wasn’t just quick; it felt impactful and well-deserved. Yuji’s fear when he realized he was outmatched by Yuta was clear in every desperate attempt to fight back, which really highlighted his determined spirit even in the face of overwhelming odds and defeat.

The recent arc of Execution didn’t just focus on the battle between Yuji and Yuta. It also introduced Naoya Zenin (Alan Lee), Maki’s arrogant and unpleasant cousin, as a major new threat. As the new head of the Zenin Clan, Naoya shares a similar technique with his father and quickly establishes himself as a villain viewers will want to see lose. He tries to kill Yuji Itadori to find out where Megumi Fushiguro (Robbie Daymond) is, but he’s surprised to discover Yuji has an ally: Choso (Ray Chase). After the Shibuya Incident, Choso, formerly known as Cursed Womb: Death Painting, joined forces with Yuji, realizing they’re technically brothers despite a 150-year age difference. Throughout the series, Choso’s main goal has been to protect his younger brothers, and now that includes Yuji.

The fight between Naoya and Choso feels more intense than the one between Yuji and Yuta, because neither of these characters has the same level of protection from harm that Gojo’s students do. Like the Yuta/Yuji fight, this battle really lets Choso shine, especially as he’s fighting with everything he has. Fueled by his strong connection to Yuji and his willingness to sacrifice himself for his “brother,” Choso fights with fierce determination, using all his abilities without holding back. Naoya adds to the drama by acting arrogant and overconfident, believing he understands Choso’s powers, which makes the fight even more suspenseful for viewers.

The two action scenes were brilliantly crafted and contributed to the story’s main conflict, ensuring both felt important. This showcased the animation team’s impressive ability to translate a complicated and detailed fight from the storyboard to the final product.

The Biggest Twist Solidifies a New Power Dynamic for Jujutsu Society

While the action was amazing, the story’s central mystery was the most captivating part. The writers did a great job keeping Yuta’s intentions unclear, which made the moment Yuji seemingly died at his hands truly shocking. Yuta was originally tasked with carrying out Yuji’s punishment, as ordered by the leaders of the Jujutsu world. But the last-minute reveal – that the entire fight was a carefully planned scheme between Gojo and Yuta to protect Yuji and deceive the corrupt authorities – wasn’t just a twist for the sake of it. It was a clever and satisfying turn of events, and everything finally clicked into place, bringing a huge sense of relief that Yuta wasn’t actually Yuji’s enemy.

Yuta’s clever plan—convincing his superiors to let him execute Yuji—allowed him to get close enough to carry out the sentence, but also secretly reverse it. He did this by using his unique healing ability to instantly revive Yuji the moment his heart stopped, demonstrating a level of skill second only to Gojo. Now that Gojo is sealed, Yuta is the most powerful and formidable sorcerer still active, wielding a rare and incredibly challenging technique.

Yuta’s return to the main story, after mostly appearing in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, was incredibly rewarding. While his kindness towards Yuji was heartwarming, it was his reunion with Maki Zenin that truly highlighted his deep loyalty to Gojo and his friends. Seeing his concern and support for Maki after her severe injuries in Shibuya reminded viewers of the strong connection they formed in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The combined power of Yuji, Yuta, Maki, Megumi, Choso, and Yuki Tsukumo as they searched for Tengen created a sense of urgency and anticipation for what’s to come. This impressive team, built on the relationships and strength shown throughout the series – especially in the recent events – significantly raised the emotional stakes and set the stage for an exciting continuation of the story with the Culling Games arc.

The English voice actors were a huge strength, perfectly capturing the story’s serious themes and the consequences of the events in Shibuya, which heightened the tension even further. Yuji and Yuta, voiced by McArthur and McKee, were particularly impressive, portraying a full range of emotions as both rivals and partners, and convincingly conveying the weight of their circumstances. The success of the game largely depended on their performances, and they absolutely delivered, exceeding all expectations.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Execution is a standout anime that fully justifies the series’ popularity. It’s an exciting, visually stunning, and well-acted arc that both wraps up the aftermath of the Shibuya incident and expertly sets the stage for what’s coming next. Execution powerfully demonstrates the new dangers facing the world without Gojo and firmly establishes Yuta Okkotsu as a key player in the fight to save humanity. It will leave viewers eagerly anticipating how the sorcerers will face the challenges ahead.
