James Gunn Teases the Future of the DCU After Netflix Purchase

Warner Bros. Discovery is about to have new owners. Netflix has won a competitive bidding war and will be buying the studio and everything it owns. This news has caused some friction in the industry, particularly with Paramount, who feel they weren’t given a fair chance to make a deal. Paramount may try to argue their offer was better, but this could be a lengthy process. Meanwhile, Netflix is moving forward quickly, with CEO Ted Sarandos already planning what to do with Warner Bros. Discovery’s future movie releases.

Currently, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) films will continue to be released in cinemas for the near future, which is positive news for James Gunn and Peter Safran. They are actively developing the DC Universe, with several projects already scheduled for release in 2026. Bloomberg reports that Gunn and Safran weren’t involved in the recent sale negotiations, but the future of DC was a key topic of discussion. Now that Netflix appears to be the leading contender, Gunn is prepared to discuss his vision for the DC Universe.

He told Bloomberg that seeing a movie with others is a uniquely valuable experience, and especially works well with large-scale, visually impressive films.

James Gunn isn’t alone in his thinking, as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has stated he doesn’t think DC content should be limited to streaming.

According to one source, the DC Universe has the potential to succeed across all media formats. They believe some stories are best experienced in cinemas globally, while others are better suited for a series format.

The DCU Is Staying on Course – For Now

James Gunn will likely keep getting asked about how Netflix buying Warner Bros. Discovery will affect him and his DC Universe plans, but the deal isn’t predicted to finalize until late 2026. Before that happens, the DCU will release a few big projects in cinemas. The first is Supergirl, which recently showed off the first images of the character’s costume. The movie will follow Kara Zor-El on an exciting space journey and also set up events for the 2027 film, Man of Tomorrow. This September, the franchise will shift focus with Clayface, a story exploring the origins of the villain and including references to Batman.

It seems very likely that the two DC Universe movies planned for 2026, along with the film Man of Tomorrow, will be released in theaters as scheduled. Beyond that, however, the future is uncertain. James Gunn and his team have a great chance to demonstrate that the DC Universe can succeed in theaters and compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come.
