With the year winding down, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners remains a highly anticipated 2025 film, and it’s easy to see why – it boasts an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and received glowing reviews from us. If you’ve seen it, you’ve probably been pondering why Li Jun Li’s character, Grace, allowed the vampires inside. Fortunately, the actress has now explained her motivations. Warning: Spoilers follow!
Why Did Grace Let The Vampires Into The Juke Joint?
As fans of Sinners will remember, the characters in the Juke Joint become safe from the vampires by the third act because the vampires can’t enter unless invited. But Grace jeopardizes everyone’s safety when she extends an invitation. Actress Li recently told Variety she had many conversations with the film’s writer and director, Ryan Coogler, about this specific plot point. She explained that…
I asked why she hadn’t thought about how her actions would affect others. He just replied, ‘She’s a mother,’ as if that explained everything.
As viewers may remember, Grace lets the vampires inside after their leader, Remmick, threatens her teenage daughter, Lisa. Driven by her protective instincts as a mother, she doesn’t realize she’s putting everyone at the Juke Joint at risk. The writer, Li, acknowledges Grace’s choice was risky and likely to upset some viewers, but after talking with director Coogler, they made one adjustment.

HBO Max subscriptions start at $10.99 per month, and you can start watching Sinners now! For that price, you’ll get access to a huge library of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. Check out the deal here.

The Moment Ryan Coogler Added To Give More “Context”To Grace’s Decision
I recently learned something really cool about Black Panther. Apparently, Ryan Coogler actually wrote in the scene where Grace challenges Smoke about not wanting to fight, preferring to just wait things out. Li Jun Li shared that detail, and I thought it was a fantastic addition – it really added depth to their characters and the tension of the moment.
That scene wasn’t in the original plan. I spoke with Ryan and suggested we add something to show why the character feels so vulnerable – she doesn’t have much going for her, and the audience will likely dislike her when she welcomes the others. I thought it would be helpful to give viewers a little background to understand her situation.
I initially had some doubts about Grace’s actions in Sinners. However, learning about what happened behind the scenes while filming has completely changed my perspective. I not only understand her character better now, but I also appreciate the choices made for her. Although her decision might not seem perfectly logical, it makes sense within the story, especially knowing how much thought and care the actress and director put into developing each scene.
If you’ve only seen the movie once, it’s worth watching again – you’ll likely appreciate it even more with each viewing. While Grace’s choices did escalate the violence in Sinners, it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun if the characters had simply waited for daylight instead of fighting vampires.
