Percy Jackson’s Rick Riordan Explains Season 2 Course Correction From Sea of Monsters Movie, Teases Even Better Season 3 (Exclusive)

Ever since the first season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians ended, fans have been eagerly awaiting Season 2. But the excitement isn’t just about getting more of a show they love. Many Percy Jackson fans are hoping the new season will be a much better adaptation of Rick Riordan’s popular book, The Sea of Monsters, than the 2013 movie was. Now, Riordan is sharing his thoughts, explaining how the series is improving – and promising even more improvements in Season 3.

Rick Riordan has been very open about his disappointment with the Percy Jackson movies, once describing the scripts as devastating to his work. However, speaking with ComicBook before the Season 2 premiere, he shared that he now understands the challenges of adapting a book for the screen. He’s also happy he’s been able to help shape the Disney+ series to better serve both longtime fans and the story itself.

Riordan explained that going through the adaptation process helped him understand how things can easily go wrong and the many pitfalls involved. He doesn’t take criticisms as personally anymore because he understands the reasons behind them. He’s also glad to be involved now and guide the adaptation towards a result that will appeal to both general audiences and book fans.

Riordan Says Adapting Percy Jackson for Disney+ Is A Work in Progress (But It’s Only Getting Better)

Rick Riordan shared that he and the team working on Percy Jackson are figuring things out as they adapt the books for television. They’re learning what works best, especially when it comes to capturing Percy’s unique voice on screen. Riordan feels the show is constantly getting better, and he expects Season 3, which is currently being filmed, to be even stronger.

We’re constantly improving how we tell this story, learning with each season. You can really see that progress in Season 2, and even more so in Season 3, which is currently being filmed. A big challenge is adapting Percy’s voice from the books for the screen. The books are told from his perspective, with a lot of his humor being internal thoughts. That doesn’t translate directly to a TV show. So, we’re focused on giving Walker Scobell the best lines and material possible so he can capture that unique Percy Jackson voice. At this point, it’s about refining the humor and pacing to make everything just right. We’re always looking for ways to improve those aspects.

Regarding changes for Season 2, Rick Riordan kept specific details under wraps, but he did mention the show will adjust the pacing in the early episodes compared to the books. He explained these shifts allow the series to explore different characters’ viewpoints, which wasn’t possible when the story was told solely from Percy’s perspective, ultimately making the show even better.

Riordan explained that the initial episodes of the series move quickly and differ from the book for a few reasons. Primarily, they needed to jump right into the story, remind viewers of past events, and establish excitement. He also mentioned streamlining the plot by omitting monsters already featured in the movie, allowing them to focus on fresh content fans would appreciate. A key benefit of the TV format, he added, was the ability to show the story from multiple perspectives—like Clarisse’s—giving viewers a richer, more complete understanding of events happening simultaneously.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuts Wednesday, December 10th on Disney+.
