Marvel Cosmic Invasion Characters, Ranked

Marvel Cosmic Invasion features a diverse cast of comic book heroes, from well-known favorites like Spider-Man and Wolverine to lesser-known characters such as Beta Ray Bill and Phyla-Vell. What’s great is that each hero plays differently, with their own unique strengths and weaknesses – a nice change from games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge where characters often feel very similar.

All of the characters in this game are fun to play, and none of them feel weak. However, some are stronger than others, so here’s a ranking of all 15 characters from Marvel Cosmic Invasion.

15) Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer is a visually striking character, known for his surfboard and shiny silver appearance – proving that a simple design can be very effective. However, he doesn’t feel as impactful in Cosmic Invasion. While his ability to deflect attacks and powerful beam can deal significant damage, most of his other moves are fairly ordinary. He also becomes available later in the game, meaning players likely won’t experience anything new by the time they unlock him. On the bright side, surfing is a fun and quick way to get around.

14) Black Panther

Black Panther is a versatile character thanks to his quick attacks, powerful ultimate move, and effective dodging, making him useful in many situations. His sonic daggers also give him an advantage at a distance that characters like Wolverine lack. However, Wolverine often feels like a stronger version of Black Panther. Focusing more on parrying attacks would help differentiate Black Panther, as his energy-absorbing suit logically allows him to deflect damage. While his passive ability hints at this potential, rewarding him with more sonic damage after being hit feels underwhelming and doesn’t connect well with his other moves. His charged parry, though somewhat limited, can be useful against larger opponents, and his daggers at least offer some ranged attack capability.

13) Nova

Tribute Games made a daring choice by featuring Nova, a lesser-known character, at the start of the game. It would have been simpler to focus on more popular heroes like Captain America or Iron Man. Nova is presented as a central character with a balanced skillset. He’s strong in both close combat and from a distance thanks to his variety of beams and punches, and his ability to fly makes him very mobile. A special passive ability that enhances his ranged attacks gives players who master his abilities a distinct advantage.

12) Phoenix

Okay, so playing as Phoenix in Marvel Cosmic Invasion is way different than in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. She’s not some fragile character you have to protect; she’s straight-up powerful. Her telekinetic grab is awesome because it’s long-range, and I can really control where enemies end up – it’s unlike anything other characters with grabs can do. It’d be cool if her special abilities worked with her grabs, but even as they are, they’re useful. Filling up her meter lets me add flames to her dash and air attacks, and honestly, you can just spam the flaming dash – it turns her into this crazy, fast fireball that builds up combos super quickly. Her ultimate takes a little while to charge, but it goes straight up, which is cool, and if you time it right, it can hit a ton of enemies at once.

11) Venom

Venom is a really expressive character, thanks to his wild tongue, over-the-top movements, and ability to transform – especially into a shark or wrecking ball. He’s a unique fighter, combining Spider-Man’s swinging agility with the raw strength of someone like She-Hulk, letting him grab and toss opponents. While it would have been cool to see a different, unexpected hero included, Venom definitely stands out enough to earn his spot.

10) Captain America

Okay, so as a Captain America player, I can tell you he’s really strong in close combat – he’s got a cool running attack and some solid punches. But honestly, his shield is what makes him. Being able to block incoming attacks is a huge deal, and it sets him apart from a lot of other characters. Plus, you can throw the shield for some ranged attacks, which takes a little practice to get the timing right. What’s also neat is his passive ability that makes team attacks even better, so he really encourages you to use all the game’s features. My one complaint? It feels a little vulnerable when your shield is off doing work and you’re left without a good way to defend yourself!

9) Spider-Man

Spider-Man is a key character in any team-based Marvel game, and Marvel Cosmic Invasion highlights why. While his fast swinging can be a little difficult to control, it allows him to move around the battlefield quickly. He can also use his webs to pull enemies closer and stay on the attack. Plus, he can slow down opponents, helping his teammates, and gets a free refill of web fluid for dodging attacks – a nice bonus!

8) Storm

Storm is a powerful character in the right hands. She excels at medium range thanks to her projectiles, especially if players can accurately control her cyclone. By combining this with her ability to float and dodge, she can avoid damage and consistently apply pressure. Up close, her fast, multi-hit attacks are also very effective, and she boasts one of the game’s strongest ultimate abilities due to its wide area of effect.

7) Phylla-Vell

Phylla-Vell is a less common character choice, but she complements the team nicely. Her Quantum Sword allows for extended combos and helps her quickly get into fighting range—it’s a versatile ability. As one of the few close-combat characters who can fly, she excels at aerial juggling and combos. While her charged parry takes a moment to prepare, it unleashes a powerful cosmic attack that builds up her special meter, thanks to her unique ability. She can be a challenging opponent in the campaign, but mastering her is rewarding.

6) Beta Ray Bill

While they could have easily included Thor, Beta Ray Bill is a much more compelling character to wield Mjolnir in this game. His unique appearance helps him stand out, but he truly deserves his place on the roster. Being able to attack enemies with both Beta Ray Bill’s powerful punches and Mjolnir itself creates a versatile fighting style that’s effective from any range. Plus, the impact of his attacks feels amazing, which really highlights how well-made and polished the game is.

5) Iron Man

Iron Man might feel a little awkward to control at first, but he becomes incredibly powerful once you get the hang of his movements. Successfully blocking attacks and then using the resulting unlimited ammo is really satisfying, rewarding players who master the timing. His thrusters make it easy to fight in the air, and his powerful ground pound lets him continue attacking even after landing. He can also control the battlefield with a charge attack that releases damaging electrical orbs. Plus, his ultimate ability is a fantastic nod to the classic Marvel vs. Capcom 2 game and can wipe out almost any enemy.

4) Cosmic Ghost Rider

Cosmic Ghost Rider is a surprisingly strong choice in this game. He’s an unexpected pick – most players probably wouldn’t immediately think of him when considering powerful, motorcycle-riding characters. What really makes him stand out is the variety in his attacks and abilities. He can control a large area of the screen effectively. He can pull enemies in close with a charge attack, and his special move is a strong, fire-based gun that gains extra ammo when you use the charge attack to set up kills. This creates a satisfying loop where skillful play is consistently rewarded.

3) Wolverine

Wolverine is easily one of the best characters in the game. His incredibly strong adamantium claws make him a dangerous opponent, and he’s simple to learn, meaning players can start winning quickly – you’ll probably even unlock the achievement for landing 100 hits in a row early on. He’s also very mobile thanks to his quick dodge, letting him easily engage and disengage from fights. While dodging doesn’t offer any special rewards, his overall kit is designed to be accessible to a wide range of players. His fast healing and special attack, which doesn’t require any special resources, contribute to this. Plus, his charge attack can function as a counter, adding a layer of strategy beyond simply mashing buttons.

2) Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon is a detailed and fun character to play in Marvel Cosmic Invasion. He’s versatile in combat, switching between pistol shots and claw attacks for close or medium range, and can unleash a powerful machine gun with his charge attack. His grenades are unpredictable, but they work well with the combo system – the longer your combo, the better chance you have of triggering a screen-clearing explosion. Plus, he has unique abilities like laying mines and a dive kick that can be chained together, making him a really exciting character to master.

1) She-Hulk

She-Hulk is a standout character who breaks the fourth wall with flair and dominates in combat. Her attacks, like those of Beta Ray Bill, have a powerfully destructive sound that makes playing as her incredibly satisfying. This strong sense of power is woven throughout her entire design. Throwing and slamming opponents feels incredibly impactful thanks to the weighty animations and clear display of her strength. Even using enemies as projectiles is both amusing and highlights just how powerful she is.

Her most powerful move involves growing to an enormous size before slamming into the ground, breaking the concrete into pieces. Similar to other characters designed to work well with specific strategies, her unique ability enhances her melee attacks after using a grab, encouraging players to vary their approach. While her charged attack offers some distance, it’s her incredible close-range power – and the impressive visual and sound effects that accompany it – that make playing her so satisfying.
