Looking ahead to major game releases in 2025, titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong immediately come to mind. A new Battlefield aims to challenge Call of Duty, and a new mobile game is already a contender for game of the year. While many genres have seen strong releases, the “cozy game” scene feels surprisingly lacking. Instead of standout successes, I’m mostly remembering games that didn’t quite live up to expectations.
2024 was a bit of a mixed bag for cozy gaming fans. We were expecting games like Witchbrook and the first playable version of Paralives, but both were pushed back. While The Sims 4 continued to release new content, it faced some challenges. Some releases, like Pixelshire, didn’t go well at all. Tales of the Shire had its fans, but many players were disappointed by its brief storyline and focus on cooking rather than farming. Now, fans are looking ahead to 2026, which already boasts a promising lineup of games that could finally deliver what everyone’s hoping for.
2025 Was a Rough Year for New Cozy Games

Looking back at 2025, it’s surprising that despite the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, there weren’t many highly-rated, relaxing games. The original Nintendo Switch became popular for games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so people expected a strong lineup of cozy titles for the Switch 2 as well. However, the new console didn’t launch until late in the year, and many of the newest relaxing games are smaller, independent projects. These games usually appear on computers first, and only come to consoles if they’re successful – and unfortunately, quite a few of them didn’t gain enough traction this year.
Pixelshire was a farming game that generated a lot of excitement after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Players hoped it would be similar to the popular game Stardew Valley, but it launched with problems. It was missing seasons and had numerous bugs, some of which blocked players from completing the story. While updates fixed some of these issues, many gamers were disappointed with the final product.
Similar issues have plagued other games trying to challenge The Sims 4. inZOI required powerful computers, and To Pixelia launched with a lot of bugs. While these games attracted some players, many were left wanting more. Tales of the Shire faced similar criticism – some, including myself, found it enjoyable, but a lot of players, especially those who were excited about a Lord of the Rings farming sim, were disappointed it wasn’t a larger, more detailed experience.
While not everything released in 2025 flopped, the cozy gaming genre faced some challenges. Fantasy Life i performed decently, and the latest Story of Seasons pleased fans of the classic Harvest Moon. However, the struggles of this year have made many gamers hesitant to try new titles. Fortunately, early 2026 looks promising, with a lot of potentially great games on the horizon.
Exciting Early 2026 Cozy Game Releases We Know of So Far

As a games writer, it’s important for me to know about upcoming releases. While I follow everything happening in the gaming world, I’m especially passionate about relaxing ‘cozy’ games and immersive fantasy RPGs. Looking ahead to the first three months of 2026, I’m already worried about how I’ll find the time to play them all! There are so many exciting new cozy games coming out, and that’s before the big Wholesome Snack showcase even happens!
Here are a few of the games I and other cozy gamers have to look forward to in early 2026 so far:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 Release & Switch 2 Edition – January 15th
- Highly anticipated pixel art coffee shop sim Tailside – January 21st
- Open-world horse raising game Legend of Khiimori – March 3rd
- Pokemon’s first-ever life sim, Pokemon Pokopia – March 5th
- Visual novel spinoff Coffee Talk Tokyo – March 5th
- 3D anime-inspired farming sim Starsand Island – Q1 2026
Honestly, just seeing all the upcoming games is exhausting! I already have a huge backlog, and it feels like every day leading up to The Game Awards brings a ton of new release announcements. It’s awesome, but also… a little overwhelming!
With lots of exciting life, farming, and management games on the horizon, I’m optimistic that 2026 will be a great year for relaxing, cozy games. While not every game will likely meet expectations, I think we’ll definitely see some real winners. As we move into the new year, I’m hoping the cozy gaming scene will bounce back after a somewhat disappointing 2025. Hopefully, we’ll also get to play highly anticipated titles like Paralives and Witchbrook later in the year.
