Hideo Kojima says his new horror game, OD, will be a departure from his previous work. However, he playfully mentioned his upcoming espionage game, Physint, feels like something he could create effortlessly. In an interview with Ananweb, Kojima admitted that while espionage games aren’t a new idea, Kojima Productions is focused on finding innovative ways to make Physint stand out.
He said, through translation, that creating Physint, an espionage game, would be very straightforward. He explained that the core gameplay – like a soldier sneaking into enemy territory, facing resistance, and eliminating opponents one by one – is inherently enjoyable and simple to develop, regardless of how it unfolds.
Hideo Kojima discussed how he plans to make his new game, Physint, stand out, building on ideas he’s used in the Metal Gear series. He wants to add unique gameplay elements and push storytelling boundaries by blending cinematic techniques with game design. While known for lengthy cutscenes, Kojima aims to go beyond that by collaborating with professional film crews during the game’s development.
He explained that they’re actively trying to avoid relying on simple tricks or gimmicks. This new game is an attempt to blur the lines between movies and video games, and he’s considering involving not only film actors, but also the people who work behind the scenes in filmmaking. He admits he’s not sure how well that will work, though.
Things are changing so fast these days that the ideas and societal issues I’m exploring in the game might actually happen in real life before I even finish making it.
Regarding OD, Kojima explained that while his team drew inspiration from previous games for its basic mechanics and gameplay, OD will ultimately be a completely original experience. He didn’t provide many details, but mentioned they are aiming to fundamentally rethink how horror games are typically delivered and played.
Kojima explained that while he can’t reveal details just yet, and isn’t sure if the project will succeed, they’re attempting something truly new. While his previous games, like stealth and delivery titles, were innovative in their gameplay, they still followed familiar structures. This new project aims to revolutionize how the game is offered as a service, making it a significant undertaking. He hinted that the recently released trailer contains clues, encouraging viewers to analyze it closely to uncover the mystery.
Although Kojima Productions is likely working towards a new game called OD, the development of Physint is still in its early stages. Hideo Kojima mentioned in August that Physint was just beginning the planning phase. In September, he announced three actors who will be in the game: Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-Seok, and Minami Hamabe.
