Initial viewership numbers are in for the premiere of ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea‘, which aired as a two-part event.
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was so excited for the new spin-off! It finally premiered on BBC One this past Sunday, December 7th, and it’s all thanks to Russell T Davies bringing it to life.
The show got off to a great beginning, with the first episode averaging 2.82 million viewers and the second episode on BBC One attracting an average of 2.05 million.
This episode’s viewership surpassed that of any regular episode from Doctor Who’s fourteenth and fifteenth seasons, excluding the Christmas specials. However, it’s important to remember that this new series is being released differently than previous seasons.
Previous seasons of the show released episodes on BBC iPlayer hours or even a full day before they aired on BBC One. However, the new season, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ will be available on iPlayer at the same time it’s broadcast on BBC One.

The War Between the Land and the Sea, set in the Doctor Who universe, centers around Barclay (Russell Tovey), an ordinary man chosen to represent humanity when the ancient Sea Devils unexpectedly reappear.
Tovey stars in the series with Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Alexander Devrient return from Doctor Who as their characters Shirley Bingham, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Colonel Ibrahim.
Davies recently expressed his satisfaction with the series, telling TopMob magazine that it’s incredibly entertaining, epic in scope, and full of both thrilling and romantic moments – viewers will be amazed.
