How Tokenization Will Change Everything…Or Not? 🤷‍♂️

So, listen to this: tokenization is, like, the latest buzzword—a real hot topic nowadays. And let me tell you, it’s not just some random trend on X. Kraken and Robinhood are in on it, letting folks trade tokenized stocks. Wow, thrilling, right? Bitwise’s Matt Hougan thinks there are about $257 trillion worth of assets sitting around, just waiting for a shiny new tokenization coat. You’d think we’re sitting on gold or something. 🤑 But hey, not everyone’s on board. The regulators are wagging their fingers. U.S. SEC big shots like Paul Atkins are all for it, while Hester Peirce is playing the role of the cautious grandma warning us about “unique risks.”

So, What’s Hester Peirce Blabbing About?

On July 9, 2025—yes, mark your calendars, folks! Hester’s out here dropping knowledge bombs on the SEC website. She titled it “Enchanting but not Magical.” Oh, the drama! 🥳 In the media, she’s basically saying, “Hey, tokenized securities are still—surprise!—securities.” Thanks for the revelation, Hester! ✨

She goes on to say that just because you’ve wrapped your securities in a blockchain bow doesn’t make them a different gift. It’s still the same ol’ securities laws, folks. So it’s a heads-up for all you investors: don’t get too cozy with that new token because there are real risks lurking in the shadows—kind of like that last date you had. Yikes.

And what’s up with these “unique risks?” Some characters are tokenizing securities they didn’t even create. Can you imagine that? It’s like someone taking credit for your pizza recipe. 🍕 Traders, keep your eyes peeled; stay sharp out there!

“While blockchain-based tokenization is new, the process of issuing an instrument representing a security is not. The same legal requirements apply to on- and off-chain versions of these instruments.”

At the end, she’s all about collaboration; she’s like, “Hey, let’s have a sit-down with the SEC. We’ll hammer something out like a couple of pals.”

Absolutely loving Hester’s leadership.

Rather than sue everyone, she writes a blog and everyone gets the message.

Respect. ✊🏼

Then t Hester? “Surprise! They’re still securities!” It’s like “Seinfeld,” but with fewer laughs and more regulations.

Is Hester Speaking for the SEC?

Hester has her cautionary cape on, but then there’s Paul Atkins—he’s rolling out the red carpet for tokenized stocks. He’s calling it nothing short of “innovation.” A real stage for tokenized securities to strut their stuff! Talk about a bipolar committee. 😜

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins: “Tokenization is an innovation, and we at the SEC should be focused on how do we advance innovation in the marketplace.”

He gets that far, but don’t think he’s suggesting we keep the trading practices as is. He seems to think tokenized securities aren’t the magical new unicorn we’ve all been waiting for; they just need a little TLC. So, at least they’re on the same page, right?

What’s Wrong with the RWA Markets?

Let’s raise awareness, everyone. Better supervision, clearer rules—yeah, we need that. There have been these awkward moments lately where companies just shrug off any connection with tokenized securities as if they didn’t know what they were getting into. Classic!

Take OpenAI; they totally ghosted Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s grand speech about tokenized OpenAI shares. “Uh, yeah, those aren’t actually equity,” he later confessed. How awkward! Like saying you’re single at a wedding. 😅

At our recent crypto event, we announced a limited Stock Token giveaway on OpenAI and SpaceX to eligible European customers. While it is true that they aren’t technically “equity” (you can see the precise dynamics in our Terms for those interested), the tokens effectively give…

What’s the Future of Tokenized Stocks?

Vlad thinks tokenizing shares empowers the little guy! It’s for everyone, not just the suits. He’s over here telling Bloomberg that the SEC is batting for the home team to adjust the rules. Who knew tokenization is his new BFF?

“Tokenization is the biggest innovation to come to capital markets in the past decade.”

— Robinhood CEO, @vladtenev

He’s right. The future isn’t crypto vs traditional — it’s both, working together.

Now, Matt Hougan from Bitwise is predicting the future like he’s a financial Nostradamus. With a whopping market value of $257 trillion for stocks and bonds, he’s thinking Layer 1 blockchains will be ready to rumble for this emerging market. Spoiler alert: Larry Fink agrees; he’s convinced everything can be tokenized. Wow, I wonder if my old baseball cards could pull that off too? ⚾️

Compared to our $257 trillion dreams, the $2 trillion stablecoin market seems like pocket change. Matt thinks we’re still in the “early bird gets the worm” phase for tokenized investments. Better set your alarms, people!

“I still think it will take more than a decade before the majority of stock and bond trading happens on-chain. But with major financial firms like Robinhood and Tradeweb positioning themselves for the transition today, I’ve started to wonder: Could tokenization achieve 1-5% penetration in a few years? Could a dozen major pilot projects lift us to that level of market penetration? It seems possible, and it would translate into trillions of dollars … more than any other crypto application or asset, including Bitcoin.”
