Battlefield 6 Design Director Says “We’re Not Doing a Good Enough Job” With Portal’s Discoverability

Battlefield 6 has been successful for Battlefield Studios, but Ripple Effect’s design director, Justin Wiebe, says they want to make the game’s Portal mode even better. In an interview with PC Gamer, Wiebe explained that the studio hasn’t done a good enough job supporting content created by the player community.

Wiebe praised the Portal community for their ingenuity, explaining they were able to achieve incredible results despite limitations. He noted they put in a lot of effort. He also highlighted that Portal simplifies the process of creating and sharing content with other players, making it much easier than before.

He explained that he needed to be actively online whenever people wanted to use his creations, otherwise they wouldn’t work. This made it nearly impossible for anything he made to become widely popular.

Although the Portal feature in Battlefield 6 was intended to fix certain problems, it’s been facing challenges of its own. One issue is that it’s hard for players to find genuinely new and interesting game modes. Besides the official content created by the developers, many ‘experiences’ within Portal are simply ways for players to quickly earn points and unlock rewards.

We haven’t been doing a great job of making community-created Portal experiences available to everyone, and there’s been one frustrating technical problem holding us back. I’m eager to share these amazing creations as widely as possible, so I’ve been constantly checking on the fix. We’re really excited to release them because the content is fantastic.

Even with the current challenges, Wiebe is optimistic about the future of Battlefield 6‘s Portal mode. He feels they have the necessary components for success and hopes any remaining issues are fixed soon so the community can fully enjoy it.

The team working on Battlefield 6 has been sharing a lot about their plans and choices for the game’s updates. In a recent post to the community, they explained how the armor system in the Battlefield: REDSEC battle royale mode was designed to keep the core Battlefield 6 gameplay consistent. This means weapons should feel familiar in both Battlefield 6 and REDSEC, even though REDSEC still offers a unique playing experience.

The developers explained that this approach ensures weapons feel consistent across all game modes – Multiplayer, Gauntlet, and Battle Royale. It also allows them to make specific adjustments to REDSEC, like altering damage based on armor, without disrupting the overall weapon balance in other modes.

Battlefield 6 and REDSEC are both available across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
