Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, has revealed the first game from his studio, Nagoshi Studio. Called Gang of Dragon, the game was announced at The Game Awards 2025 with a trailer featuring the main character, Shin Ji-seong. The character will be portrayed by actor Ma Dong-seok, known for his roles in films such as Train to Busan and The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. You can watch the trailer below.
Along with the game’s trailer, a Steam page has been launched with more information about Gang of Dragon. The game is set in Kabukicho, Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife district – the same real-world location that inspired the Yakuza series’ Kamurocho. Players will experience the story of Shin Ji-seong, a prominent figure in a Korean crime organization operating in Kabukicho, as he becomes entangled in dangerous underworld power struggles.
Okay, so from what I’ve gathered, the combat looks amazing. It’s all third-person, and it’s really focusing on up-close, brutal fighting – think powerful punches and really precise swordplay. But it’s not just melee; you’ll also be able to use guns and throw grenades for ranged attacks. And get this – it looks like we’ll be doing some driving too! One screenshot showed a garage where you can customize your cars, which is a huge plus in my book!
The trailer for Gang of Dragon didn’t focus on the plot, but instead highlighted the game’s intense violence. This new game differs from the Yakuza series because its main character is far more ruthless and readily uses powerful weapons to eliminate enemies. Unlike the heroes of the Yakuza games – Kiryu and Ichiban – who generally avoid killing, Shin Ji-seong in Gang of Dragon appears to have no problem with lethal force.
A release date for Gang of Dragon hasn’t been announced yet. While Nagoshi Studio hasn’t confirmed which platforms the game will be on, it’s likely to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Toshiro Nagoshi and Daisuke Sato both left Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Sega in October 2021. Shortly after, in January 2022, Nagoshi revealed he was starting a new studio, Nagoshi Studio, in partnership with NetEase Games, and he currently leads it as president and CEO.
When announcing the new studio, Nagoshi explained he wanted to foster a more collaborative and free environment for developers. He believes even the most skilled creators need teamwork to reach their full potential. To make this happen, the studio encourages open conversations where everyone’s opinion matters, regardless of their position. They also embrace experimentation, viewing mistakes as learning opportunities and valuable assets rather than setbacks.
