Considering the recent successful revivals of the Predator and Alien series, it’s surprising that Terminator remains stuck in development. The first two Terminator films weren’t just exciting action movies; they also thoughtfully explored the anxieties surrounding rapid technological advancements in the late 80s and 90s, and the potential dangers they posed. Now that the future Terminator predicted is here, those films feel less like science fiction and more like a warning we should have heeded.
James Cameron is currently promoting the release of his new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the popular 3D sci-fi Avatar series. During interviews, he’s been asked about the Terminator franchise, and he’s openly discussed the difficulties of making more Terminator movies. However, it’s debatable whether his assessment of the situation is entirely correct.
Cameron recently shared that he’s been casually developing a new story idea within the Terminator world. In an interview with i09, he confessed that writing another Terminator movie is a challenge. He then confirmed what many fans have suspected: real-world advancements in science and technology have surpassed even the predictions of science fiction. We’re now facing issues that used to only exist in books and films, and are experiencing them in reality.
Cameron explained that the themes of Terminator feel less original now because the world has changed. He also admitted that it’s harder for him to predict future technology and threats, given his age. He said it’s difficult to foresee even a year or two ahead, but he hopes to stay relevant by planning for the future now, rather than later.
It’s true that predicting the future, even just a year or two ahead, is incredibly difficult right now. Many people already feel like we’re on the brink of a major crisis, like the world could fall apart at any moment. Others believe we’ve already embraced a digital, machine-driven life so completely that the movie Terminator seems almost amusingly outdated.
Terminator‘s Biggest Problem Isn’t Being Outdated

Cameron is right that the world has changed since the original Terminator films, and that impacts the story and its message. However, he doesn’t quite pinpoint why the series started to decline after Terminator 2.
The later Terminator films strayed from the original’s core ideas and got bogged down in their own complicated storylines. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines completely contradicted the first film’s message about free will, portraying Judgment Day and John Connor’s future as predetermined. Terminator Salvation attempted to restart the series by focusing on the future war and altering the timeline to introduce new ideas. Genisys and Dark Fate both used time travel and alternate realities to rework the John Connor story, bringing back familiar actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. However, none of this complex mythology, ambitious science fiction, or reliance on nostalgia has connected with audiences—and it shouldn’t have. The original Terminator worked because it was a straightforward, scary thriller that happened to include some thought-provoking sci-fi elements for a mainstream audience.

The Terminator series might be getting back on track. Netflix’s anime show, Terminator Zero, really embraced the science fiction elements, telling a fresh story where time travelers build a new AI that actually protects humans from Skynet. While it appealed mostly to sci-fi and anime fans, Terminator Zero demonstrated the franchise can be updated for today’s audiences. Perhaps James Cameron should think beyond the original idea that technology always leads to disaster. And who’s better at imagining new worlds than the director of the Avatar movies?
