Every New Mega Evolution In Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC, Ranked Worst to Best

So, I’ve been playing the new Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC, Mega Dimension, and they finally released all the story content. We knew it would add new Mega Evolutions, but I was curious how many they’d actually be. Now that I’ve had a few days with it, I can tell you all the new Megas that are included. Honestly, I wasn’t super impressed with the first reveals, but some of these new Mega Evolution designs are actually really cool!

When Pokemon Legends: Z-A came out, I ranked all the new Mega Evolutions. Now, with 19 more Megas added in the DLC, it’s time to do that again! I’m mostly basing my rankings on how cool each Mega looks and the overall impression they give, rather than how strong they are in battle. So, let’s take a look at every new Mega Evolution design from the Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC, ranked from worst to best. Be warned: there are spoilers ahead if you haven’t finished the DLC yet!

19) Mega Darkrai

The new Mega Evolution for the Pokémon Darkrai truly embodies its name, bringing bad dreams to life. It’s a strangely unsettling design – both unattractive and frightening. It looks like Darkrai has become bloated from consuming the nightmares it causes. Honestly, seeing it move is disturbing – I don’t even want to describe it.

18) Mega Raichu X

This design was revealed early on when Mega Dimension was first announced, and honestly, I still don’t love it. It feels disjointed – the ears and tails don’t quite match the look of the hands and feet in terms of color and style. I understand they were aiming for a mix of Pikachu and Raichu, but the combination doesn’t really work for me.

17) Mega Golisopod

I previously mentioned Mega Barbaracle didn’t need extra arms, and this feels similar. While the new colors on the armor look good, and the added limbs definitely give it a powerful, cannon-like appearance, this Mega design still feels a bit creepy – unless you’re a fan of insects, like Misty.

16) Mega Scovillain

I’ve never actually used Scovillain in my Pokémon team, so I had to look up its original form just to compare. The colors are similar, but it looks more like a dinosaur with a bulkier body and head. While it feels like a logical evolution of its design, it’s not very exciting compared to other Pokémon. I do like that it brings back some elements from its previous form, Capasakid, though.

15) Mega Baxcalibur

I haven’t been particularly impressed with Baxcalibur, and I feel the same way about its new Mega design. It mostly just emphasizes its dinosaur-like appearance, although I do think the larger spike on its back, resembling an ice sword, is a nice touch. Overall, though, this design doesn’t stand out much compared to some of the other new Megas in the Mega Dimension DLC.

14) Mega Heatran

I have mixed feelings about this design. It definitely feels like a powerful evolution for Heatran, with a strong, fiery presence. However, the open, lava-filled mouth and overflowing lava feel a little too intense and strangely formed. I do appreciate how well the design emphasizes Heatran’s Steel typing, though.

13) Mega Raichu Y

While it’s not perfect, this design is a significant improvement over Mega Raichu X, in my opinion. I’m not a fan of the extra ear/wing-like features on its head, but overall the design feels cohesive. It reminds me of a mix between Pikachu and Alolan Raichu, which is a neat concept, though I think there was still room for improvement.

12) Mega Crabominable

Crabominable didn’t really need scary ice claws, but its new Mega Evolution definitely gives it some! I appreciate The Pokémon Company embracing the Ice-type for this design – it fits perfectly. That said, this Mega Evolution is pretty frightening, though not quite as terrifying as Mega Darkrai.

11) Mega Garchomp Z

This design is essentially a more intense version of the original Mega Garchomp. If all the Z-Moves looked this good, it would be easier to accept the ones that didn’t quite hit the mark. Mega Garchomp Z features even larger, more intimidating blades on its arms and head, giving it a more pronounced dinosaur appearance. While it doesn’t offer anything truly new, it’s a visually appealing design that stays true to the core of Garchomp. It also simplifies Garchomp’s type, making it a pure Dragon-type Pokémon.

10) Mega Glimmora

This Mega Evolution really leans into Glimmora’s flower-like appearance, essentially asking, ‘What if it were even larger?’ I appreciate that direction. The head also becomes more pointed, giving it a more intimidating look. While it’s a well-executed design, it doesn’t stand out quite as much as some others, so I’d rate it as fairly average.

9) Mega Magearna

This artificial Legendary Pokémon has two distinct forms, and its Mega Evolution also comes in two variations. While the designs are similar, they feature different color schemes that reflect the original differences between Magearna and its Original Color form. The transformation is visually simple: the Pokémon’s large, skirt-like structure shifts into battle mode, becoming massive, floating gears – though the reasoning behind this isn’t entirely clear. It’s a playful design concept that suits the way Mega Evolution works in the game, making it look like the Pokémon is preparing for action.

8) Mega Tatsugiri

Tatsugiri is a delightfully silly Pokémon, and I really enjoy it! It’s basically sushi from the newest generation of games, and its evolved form is like an even bigger plate of it – I appreciate that! I especially like how its different forms just change which of the three Tatsugiri is in the middle. However, the colors don’t quite feel right to me, and I’m not sure why it’s hovering over a rainbow puddle. It makes it look like the sushi is lining up for a race on Rainbow Road from Mario Kart, which is amusing, but doesn’t quite match the overall feel.

7) Mega Chimecho

Chimecho isn’t usually very noticeable in Pokemon Go – I often don’t even see it on the map! However, its new design is a lot of fun. It really emphasizes the windchime concept with lots of duplicates that seem to sway in the wind. It’s a clever detail that adding a metal ring also gives Chimecho the Steel type when it Mega Evolves. We appreciate that level of thoughtful design.

6) Mega Golurk

Golurk is fundamentally a large, artificial Pokémon, and its Mega Evolution really emphasizes that. The design makes its armor look even more powerful, and I especially like the addition of purple, ghostly wings, which highlight its Ghost type. This Mega Evolution feels like a logical and satisfying progression for Golurk, and it grows on me the more I look at it.

5) Mega Zeraora

This might be a controversial opinion, but I actually like the design of Mega Zeraora better than the original. It mainly switches the colors, making the blue and black stand out more than the yellow. It reminds me of a mix between Zeraora and Luxray, which I think is really cool. It still has that upright, cat-like feel of the original, but with enough of a change to make it feel fresh.

4) Mega Lucario Z

I was skeptical when this design was first shown before the Mega Dimension DLC came out. However, seeing it in the game, it actually feels like a great fit. It’s a distinct look from Mega Lucario, but still captures a similar feeling. I appreciate that it uses a color scheme similar to the original Lucario, and I’ve really started to enjoy its energetic, pop-star inspired design.

3) Mega Meowstic

Looking at my favorite Mega Evolution designs from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, I’ve noticed a trend: they all have those cool, swooping emo bangs! But I’m especially excited to see a Mega form for Meowstic, a Pokemon I’ve loved since the newer generations. This design cleverly combines elements of both its male and female appearances, mixing their colors and features. I also think it’s a fun touch that it grows taller by standing on its tail – it just has a really cool vibe.

2) Mega Staraptor

Mega Staraptor feels like a perfect evolution, building on what made the original great. It keeps the iconic feathered swoop but enhances the design to really emphasize its predatory nature. The longer tail feathers and slightly brighter colors suit its new Fighting/Flying type well. I immediately wanted to add it to my team – I’m a big fan of raptors, and this one is fantastic!

1) Mega Absol Z

This is the first new Mega Evolution you’ll find in the DLC, and it has a distinctly emo style! It’s easy to imagine this Absol Mega Evolution growing up listening to bands like My Chemical Romance and Panic! at the Disco. Adding the Ghost type was a great choice, and the design is a fantastic ghostly take on the original Mega Absol. It perfectly blends devilish and angelic elements, and it’s a look I really love.
