DC is releasing a movie similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, and the first trailer is getting a positive reaction from fans. When Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014, it quickly became hugely popular with a new generation, much like Star Wars did before it. The film connected with audiences thanks to its story of an unlikely hero (Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt) finding a family among a quirky group of aliens, and their fight against a dangerous villain. The movie’s vibrant visuals, clever writing, and fantastic soundtrack became hallmarks of the Guardians series and inspired many similar films.
James Gunn didn’t direct this film, but he seems to have chosen well by entrusting director Craig Gillespie (known for I, Tonya and Cruella) with the project. Despite their different styles, Gillespie appears to have learned from Gunn, as the upcoming Supergirl movie feels like it could easily fit alongside characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot in the same cinematic universe.
What We Know About Supergirl, Explained

I’m really excited about the new Supergirl movie! Millie Alcock, who I loved in House of the Dragon, is playing Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. It’s based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, and the story sounds wild – Kara and her dog Krypto head to another planet. Apparently, this planet weakens Kryptonian powers, and all Kara wants to do is finally get drunk and celebrate turning 23! It’s a really interesting take on the character.
Okay, so the show starts like it’s gonna be a fun celebration, but things quickly get complicated. You realize Kara’s carrying a lot of baggage from losing her family and home – it’s shaped her in ways her cousin hasn’t experienced, making her a much more complex hero. When she meets this young alien girl, Ruthey, who’s gone through something similar, Kara tries to use her powers to give Ruthey the justice she never got. But honestly, that rescue mission spirals out of control! It’s way crazier and more dangerous than she ever expected, throwing her into the path of alien gangs, ruthless dictators, killers, and even Lobo – yeah, that Lobo, played by Jason Momoa – who’s basically the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunter. It gets wild!
Supergirl Will Be More DCU Connected Than Guardians of the Galaxy Was to the MCU

It’s becoming clear that Supergirl is subtly laying the groundwork for important elements of the DC Universe that will play a larger role in future projects. This includes establishing a rivalry between Jason Momoa’s Lobo and Earth’s Kryptonian heroes—one of the few groups capable of challenging him—and also introducing the villain Brainiac. The series hints at Brainiac’s backstory through flashbacks showing Kara’s home city, Kandor, being encased in a protective field, likely as part of Brainiac’s plan to collect and miniaturize it.
Recent events in the story, particularly the traumatic experiences of the character Kara, seem to be influencing the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. Rumors suggest the film will center around Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) reluctantly teaming up to protect Earth from the villain Brainiac. If this is true, Supergirl is likely to play a significant role, and her motivations will be clearer after her own solo movie.
This approach feels more unified than what we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Marvel Studios has typically kept its realistic characters separate from its more fantastical ones—those involving magic, the supernatural, or aliens have struggled to find a consistent place within the larger story. While the Guardians of the Galaxy films were excellent, they didn’t really connect with other MCU movies—except for the big team-up events, Infinity War and Endgame. This highlights a bigger problem: Marvel hasn’t treated its science fiction and cosmic properties as a single, cohesive brand. Guardians doesn’t feel connected, in terms of style or story, to films like Thor or Captain Marvel, even though they all take place in the same cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe.
It’s interesting that James Gunn, who’s shaping the future of the DC Universe, chose to connect Supergirl so closely to those upcoming projects. While Tom King’s Supergirl story feels complete on its own and draws from classic DC history, it seems Gunn and the creative team—including King—are using what they’ve learned from past DC stories to better integrate the source material with the needs of a connected franchise.
