Netflix has become a significant force in animation, and their upcoming series, K-Pop Demon Hunters, is a prime example. Originally developed by Sony Pictures Animation, Netflix recognized the potential of this animated film and has seen great success with it. While Netflix often features popular animated shows from major studios, these aren’t always available long-term. In fact, a very popular DreamWorks animated series will be leaving Netflix next year, which may come as a surprise.
The popular character Captain Underpants first appeared in a book series in 1997 with The Adventures of Captain Underpants. Author and creator Dav Pilkey wrote twelve books featuring the superhero, and later found even more success with the Dog Man and Cat Kid series. It’s no surprise that Captain Underpants eventually became an animated series, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which ran for three seasons on DreamWorks and Netflix. However, many fans may be surprised to learn that the series, along with its spin-offs The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space and Captain Underpants Mega Blissmas, will be removed from Netflix on January 9th.
The Future of Underpants

Currently, it’s unknown if the series will be available on any streaming platforms besides the one it’s on now. It’s common for animated shows and movies to move between streaming services – Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu often license popular content to services like Pluto TV and Tubi. Since ‘Captain Underpants’ is a DreamWorks production, it’s possible the series is now seeking a new streaming home.
I’m excited to share that Captain Underpants is getting a fresh take! Next April, the superhero is diving into the world of manga with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga. It’s a really cool idea – Dav Pilkey, the original creator, is teaming up with manga artist Motojiro to create this brand new story. Scholastic has given a sneak peek at what we can expect, and it sounds amazing!
Get ready for hilarious adventures with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga! This book follows best friends George and Harold as they create Captain Underpants, a superhero who’s super-fast, incredibly strong, and can jump over buildings without a worry. Day and night, Captain Underpants battles for what’s right—and keeps things comfy with a love for all things pre-shrunk and cotton!
