Although Harry Potter was destined to defeat Voldemort, he wasn’t the only gifted wizard at Hogwarts, and arguably not even the strongest. Over the years, many students developed considerable magical abilities. The story of Harry Potter centers on a young boy whose parents were murdered, but he was shielded from harm and possessed the potential to vanquish the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort. He was kept safe and unaware of his magical abilities until he was old enough to begin his training at Hogwarts, preparing him for the challenges ahead.
Here’s a ranking of the most powerful students at Hogwarts, including Harry Potter, his friends, and even some of his rivals.
10) Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley was a key member of the heroic trio in the Harry Potter books, though he wasn’t as magically powerful as Harry or Hermione. While his brothers were more skilled and successful, Ron proved to be a courageous and dependable friend to Harry, participating in Dumbledore’s Army and fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts. After school, he became an Auror and later played a part in improving the Ministry of Magic. However, Ron often struggled with self-doubt, which held him back. Ultimately, he left his career as an Auror to join his brother in running their joke shop.
9) Padma Patil

Padma Patil was a British witch who briefly dated Harry Potter while they were both at Hogwarts. She actively resisted Voldemort’s control of the school by joining Dumbledore’s Army, demonstrating her magical skill. She even became a prefect in Ravenclaw house, but as the story focused on Harry’s inner circle, her role became smaller. She fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, though she wasn’t a central figure.
8) Cedric Diggory

You know, it’s always been a bit tragic thinking about Cedric Diggory. He wasn’t just some side character; he was genuinely talented. Being chosen for the Triwizard Tournament proves that – he was one of the best Hogwarts had to offer, unlike Harry who kind of… got entered by accident. It’s heartbreaking to think about how much potential he had, because his life was cut short. To be killed by Peter Pettigrew, using Voldemort’s own wand no less, it just feels… unfair. We’ll never know how powerful he could have truly become.
7. Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is a witch whose mother died while practicing magic, which led Luna to develop unique beliefs about the magical world. The daughter of the editor of The Quibbler magazine, she was a Ravenclaw student and a loyal friend to Harry Potter, fighting alongside him at the Battle of Hogwarts. After graduating, Luna pursued her passion for magical creatures as a Magizoologist, traveling the world to discover new species. She’s a remarkably talented witch, even managing to conjure a fully-formed Patronus at the young age of fourteen.
6) George Weasley

George and Fred Weasley were twin brothers to Ron Weasley. They were known for their playful nature and weren’t always taken seriously. Instead of pursuing traditional wizarding careers, they used their magical talents to start a successful joke shop called Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. Despite their lighthearted personalities, both were skilled and brave wizards who fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, though tragically, Fred was killed. While they weren’t focused on academic achievement, they were remarkably proficient in using magic for almost everything.
5) Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy was a recurring rival to Harry Potter throughout the series, often acting as his main tormentor. While Harry learned magic at Hogwarts, Draco was raised in a magical family and had been practicing from a young age, initially giving him an advantage. Despite this, Draco frequently lost duels to Harry, who was less experienced. Draco’s biggest weakness was his pride, but he did mature over time. Eventually, he married and had a son named Scorpius, who ultimately became a more powerful wizard than his father.
4) Neville Longbottom

For a while, many readers of the Harry Potter books thought Neville Longbottom might actually be the ‘Chosen One’ instead of Harry. While the movies didn’t emphasize this possibility as much, they still showed how significant Neville was to the story. He had a difficult childhood; his parents were severely traumatized by Bellatrix Lestrange, and he was raised by his grandmother. Despite this, Neville bravely fought Lord Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts, proving his courage. Later in life, he became a professor of Herbology and eventually the Head of Gryffindor House.
3) Ginny Weasley

Ginny Weasley is a compelling character in the Harry Potter series because she grows significantly throughout the books. Initially introduced as Ron’s younger sister, she develops into a remarkably skilled and powerful witch at Hogwarts. She excelled at Quidditch, even surpassing Harry and Ron in ability, and demonstrated extraordinary magical potential, like being able to open the Chamber of Secrets. Ginny bravely fought in the Battle of Hogwarts as one of the youngest participants, and later married Harry, with whom she had three children. After Hogwarts, she pursued a career as a professional Quidditch player.
2) Harry Potter

Harry Potter is widely considered the most powerful student at Hogwarts during his years there, largely because he was destined to defeat Lord Voldemort. While a protective spell cast when his parents died certainly gave him power, one student actually surpassed him. Nevertheless, Harry grew into a remarkably capable wizard, demonstrating intelligence, resourcefulness, and unwavering determination in his fight against Voldemort. He ultimately succeeded in killing Voldemort, with assistance from others, a feat that remains undeniable. At 17, he mastered the three Deathly Hallows, becoming the Master of Death. After graduating, he became an Auror, quickly rising through the ranks to become Head of the British Auror Office by the age of 26.
1) Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger was the brightest student at Hogwarts during Harry Potter’s time, consistently outperforming her peers. Though a half-blood, her relentless dedication drove her to excel in all areas of magic. She studied tirelessly, always striving for more than just good enough. Hermione played a crucial role in defeating Lord Voldemort, demonstrating exceptional leadership during the Battle of Hogwarts, even as a young witch. After graduating, she joined the Ministry of Magic and eventually became Minister for Magic in 2019, the 36th person to hold the position.
