In the late 1990s, Sabrina the Teenage Witch was one of the most popular sitcoms on television. The show, which began in 1996 and lasted for seven seasons, starred Melissa Joan Hart as a teenage witch. It successfully combined lighthearted family humor with the ups and downs of growing up, creating 163 episodes that many viewers still enjoy today. However, with a show that runs for so long, storylines can sometimes become inconsistent. While most inconsistencies are small mistakes, Sabrina the Teenage Witch has a particularly noticeable and funny plot hole that fans have pointed out.
The problem involves the “Christmas Amnesia” episode from Season 3 of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which first aired on December 11, 1998 – exactly 27 years ago. In the episode, Sabrina accidentally makes everyone forget about Christmas after going to a party in the Other Realm. Because she’s the only one who still remembers the holiday, she has to quickly find a way to bring the Christmas spirit back before it’s lost forever.
The episode reaches its peak when Sabrina unexpectedly meets the real Father Christmas (played by Kay E. Kuter) to fix a magical problem. The script shows Sabrina genuinely shocked to learn that Santa Claus is a real person, and this surprise is the core of the episode’s confusion – and the reason for its title, “Christmas Amnesia.” It’s ironic, because Sabrina had actually met Santa before and even saved Christmas just a year earlier, suggesting the writers themselves had forgotten that detail.
Sabrina Meets Santa in Season 2 (Before Meeting Him Again in Season 3)

The episode “Christmas Amnesia” overlooks a previous episode, “Sabrina Claus” (Season 2, Episode 12, originally aired December 19, 1997). In “Sabrina Claus,” Sabrina develops a magical form of selfishness called “egotitis” that threatens to spoil the holidays. Her aunts bring in a man named Bob (played by John Ratzenberger) to help her remember the joy of giving. It’s revealed that Bob is actually Santa Claus in disguise. The story takes an unexpected turn when Santa injures his ankle at the Spellman house, preventing him from delivering presents. Sabrina steps in to save Christmas, donning Santa’s suit and driving the sleigh herself to ensure all the children receive their gifts on time.
In 1997, Sabrina clearly knew Santa Claus was real – she’d even talked to him and helped with his work. However, the next year, the show portrayed her as if she’d never met him, treating Christmas as just a general idea. This inconsistency makes the storyline in Season 3 feel strange, as if Sabrina simply forgot the most magical night of her life to fit the new plot.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is currently available to stream on Hulu and Paramount+.
