A clever new video reimagines Stranger Things as a modern take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it really hits the mark. Stranger Things has been a huge part of pop culture for ten years, but it’s wrapping up with Season 5. One reason the show has been so popular is that its characters draw inspiration from classic pop culture and horror tropes. Natalia Dyer’s character, Nancy Wheeler, perfectly exemplifies this.
Jillustrations Studio recently shared a creative video on Instagram that combines the worlds of Stranger Things and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The video playfully reimagines a character from Stranger Things – Nancy – as if she were starring in a version of the show inspired by Buffy, even using Buffy‘s famous theme song.
The Stranger Things / Buffy Mashup is So Very Right

Jillustration Studios’ video perfectly captures a key point about the show. Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer famously flipped the typical “damsel in distress” trope often found in horror. The character Nancy initially seems like she’ll fit that mold – a woman running from the monsters of the Upside Down – but she quickly proves she’s much stronger and more resourceful. When her friend Barb is taken by the Demogorgon, Nancy immediately takes action and begins searching for her in the woods around Hawkins.
Nancy has become a standout character on Stranger Things. She’s a natural leader who quickly gets to the bottom of things, like when she uncovered Vecna’s backstory. In Season 4, she bravely led the team into the Upside Down and dealt Vecna more damage than anyone else – a moment that felt similar to Buffy taking on a monster with a rocket launcher.
What’s really interesting is how the video shows most of the other Stranger Things characters as part of Nancy’s team – her “Scooby Gang,” if you will. She takes charge, comes up with the plans, and the story often centers around her. This is especially true for her romantic interests, Steve and Jonathan, but it also applies to Robin. Their partnership was a standout in Season 4 and they continue to work together in Season 5.
The popular series Stranger Things is nearing its conclusion, but fans recently got an extra story featuring Nancy Wheeler in a new novel. This book feels like it could easily be developed into its own TV show, and many are hoping to see more of Nancy’s adventures after Stranger Things ends with its fifth season.
