This Classic SNES Game Is 10/10, No Notes

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, remains a favorite console for many, and for good reason – it had an amazing selection of games. Even the less popular titles were decent, while the best games are still considered timeless classics and true masterpieces.

Look, I’ve played a TON of SNES games, and there’s one from the early ’90s that just blows them all away. It really showed everyone what that console could do, and honestly, playing it now, it feels as good as it did back then. It’s a perfect game, a straight-up 10/10 for me.

Super Mario World Was a Game Changer for Nintendo

Nintendo struck gold in 1985 with the release of Super Mario Bros., a game that quickly became incredibly popular. It solidified Nintendo’s legacy in the gaming world and instantly made Mario a gaming icon. The game sparked a hugely successful series, and while Super Mario Bros. 3 was a step forward, Super Mario World really raised the bar.

I absolutely love Super Mario World, and one of the coolest things about it is the setting – Dinosaur Land! It’s exactly what it sounds like: a world completely full of dinosaurs. And get this – within Dinosaur Land is Yoshi’s Island, where the adorable Yoshi dinosaurs live. They quickly became a huge part of all the Mario games that came after, and it all started here! It’s amazing to think about how important they’ve become.

Following the adventures in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach head to Dinosaur Land for a relaxing vacation. However, the villainous King Bowser follows them, and predictably, he kidnaps Peach. Now, Mario and Luigi must embark on a quest to save her and bring peace back to Dinosaur Land.

This game follows the classic Mario formula with familiar platforming, but the upgraded SNES hardware allowed Mario and Luigi to perform new moves. Notably, it introduced the spin-jump, letting Mario break blocks from below for the first time.

Super Mario World really showcased the SNES controller’s capabilities. Players could use the L and R buttons to glance ahead or behind, and the X and Y buttons to make Mario run. Holding up on the directional pad even let Mario look upwards.

Super Mario World introduces a bunch of new power-ups, with the Cape Feather being the most well-known. It lets Mario and Luigi wear a cape and fly temporarily. Another cool addition is the Yoshi characters, who come in different colors and each have unique abilities – like Blue Yoshi, who can fly!

Super Mario World Lives on With Yoshi

Released in Japan in 1990 and North America in 1991, Super Mario World quickly became incredibly popular and remains the best-selling game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The game was instrumental in boosting SNES sales when it first launched, and many of the elements it introduced are still found in Mario games today.

Although Super Mario World has been re-released and remade many times, one of its biggest achievements is that it introduced the Yoshi character. Yoshi has become incredibly popular and now has his own series of games, plus he’s a regular in titles like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart.

Despite being one of the first games on the Super Nintendo, Super Mario World quickly became a standout title in the Mario franchise, known for its innovative gameplay. It’s a timeless platformer that remains enjoyable today, and many consider it a perfect 10/10 game, just as fun now as it was back in the early 1990s.
