With the holidays here, many people will be watching beloved Christmas movies like A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Each year, new holiday films also try to become classics. Last year, Red One, an action comedy with Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, aimed to do just that. The movie follows an unlikely duo on a quest to rescue Santa Claus and save Christmas. While it didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, Red One is now becoming popular on streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, which tracks how popular movies and shows are on streaming services, Red One is currently a hit on Prime Video. It’s currently No. 4 on Prime’s most-watched list, behind She Rides Shotgun, Oh. What. Fun. (a new Christmas movie hoping to become a holiday favorite), and Tell Me Softly.
Red One Bombed at the Box Office, but It’s Paying Off for Amazon

Despite performing slightly better than predicted, Red One didn’t make much money in theaters, earning $186 million worldwide with a production cost between $200 and $250 million. While a big box office success would have been nice for Amazon, the main goal was to add a popular holiday film to Prime Video. The film became available on Prime Video just a month after its theatrical release, suggesting the box office revenue was secondary to boosting the streaming service’s content library – any money earned in theaters was just a bonus.
Looking at it now, Red One seems like a win for Prime Video. Despite mostly negative reviews from critics (it has a 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s become a popular choice for viewers during the holiday season. Interestingly, audiences actually like the movie – its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is a high 89%. The film didn’t do well in theaters, but streaming numbers suggest people weren’t uninterested – they likely just preferred to wait and watch it at home since it wasn’t in theaters for very long.
Although Red One isn’t a critical success, it’s still engaging thanks to its interesting ideas. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans have great chemistry and are fun to watch together – Evans especially shines in a role that’s different from his usual characters. Their star power alone will likely attract many viewers. The film also cleverly uses traditional Christmas folklore, offering a new and entertaining take on figures like Santa Claus and Krampus. Ultimately, Red One offers a fresh perspective that helps it stand apart from typical holiday movies.
It’ll be fun to see if Red One becomes a popular holiday tradition on Prime Video each year. If it does, Amazon’s investment will have paid off. Prime will likely continue to release new Christmas movies annually (like Oh. What. Fun.), but it would be fantastic if the service developed a library of beloved holiday classics that subscribers could enjoy throughout December, watching a different film each night leading up to Christmas.
