Following reports that Rockstar Games fired over 30 employees, prompting a UK government investigation into potential union-busting, the company has strongly denied the accusations. They called the claims ‘completely untrue’ and explained the dismissals were due to employees discussing secret details about upcoming, unreleased games publicly.
The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has responded strongly to the claims. In a statement to several news sources, including Eurogamer, the union said the company’s explanation for the firings is full of inaccuracies and misleading information. They point out the company has offered several different, and contradictory, reasons for letting the workers go, suggesting they are trying to justify the dismissals after the fact.
They’re falsely portraying workers simply discussing their jobs privately as ‘leaking’ information. This seems like a clear attempt to distract from the widespread criticism they’ve faced recently – from questions raised by the UK Prime Minister to protests from game developers worldwide. Everyone is now focused on Rockstar and their unfair treatment of the people who earn them billions.
The recent layoffs reportedly started with a change in the company’s Slack policy years ago. This led developers to move their conversations to Discord, where they began discussing the possibility of forming a union. Despite a legal claim filed by the IWGB and the laid-off developers’ wish to complete Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games doesn’t appear willing to reconsider its decision.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game has been delayed twice, though Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, assures players it will still be an exceptional and groundbreaking entertainment experience, and recent reports suggest these delays were not related to company restructuring.
