Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, enjoyed a family outing just before a devastating event occurred.
Just three months before the acclaimed director and his wife were found deceased at their home on December 14th, the couple attended the premiere of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues with their children – Jake Reiner, 34, Nick Reiner, 32, and Romy Reiner, 28 – and Jake’s partner, Maria Gilfillan.
On September 9th, Rob’s family—all dressed in black—attended the Los Angeles screening of the This Is Spinal Tap sequel at The Egyptian Theatre to show their support. Rob directed, co-wrote, and starred in the film. He is also the father of Tracy Reiner, and was previously married to the late Penny Marshall.
On December 14th, Rob and Michele were found dead at their home in Brentwood, and police are investigating it as a possible murder. Their son, Nick, who was with family at an event, was arrested and is currently being held on $4 million bail, according to TopMob News. The specific charges against him have not been released.
TopMob News has contacted the Reiner family and the police for comment, but they haven’t responded yet.
Before his last movie came out, Rob reflected on the impact of This Is Spinal Tap and shared that he hadn’t really thought about revisiting the 1984 film. Spinal Tap is a humorous mockumentary following a British heavy metal band’s troubled attempt to regain popularity on a U.S. tour.
The 78-year-old recently told Variety that they never intended to make a sequel, not ever. For years, fans had been asking them to create one, but they consistently refused, feeling the story was complete as it was.
I remember chatting with my friend and colleague, Harry Shearer, about this whole situation. He’d actually just won the rights back to the film from StudioCanal – a fantastic victory after a legal battle in 2016! We were both excited to explore what possibilities that opened up.

Initially, we didn’t think it was possible—the standard was just too high,” Rob, who played Marty alongside Christopher Guest and Michael McKean—members of their band—explained. “But after a few meetings, we started to develop an idea.”
Okay, so when Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” finally got the recognition it deserved – seriously, it should’ve always been huge – after being in Stranger Things in 2022, Rob Reiner – you know, the guy who did When Harry Met Sally? – he immediately started thinking about a movie. It was brilliant, honestly. He knew that song needed to be in a film!
He wondered what would happen if a well-known artist started playing around with a Spinal Tap song, someone filmed it on their phone, posted it to TikTok, and it unexpectedly became a hit, bringing the band back into the spotlight. That thought process, combined with other ideas, led to their current project.

After Rob and Michele sadly passed away, many of the people who worked with the director on Spinal Tap shared their condolences.
Harry, 81, shared on Instagram on December 15th that he was deeply saddened by the deaths of Rob and Michele, calling it a tragedy like those found in ancient Greek stories.
