Twenty-seven years ago today, King of the Hill aired a Christmas episode widely considered to be one of the best for the character of Bill Dauterive. While King of the Hill featured several Christmas specials during its original run, many of them focused on the uncomfortable realities of family get-togethers. The holidays were especially difficult for Bill, who was often depicted as down on his luck; the Christmas season amplified his sadness to the point where his friends worried about his well-being and needed to look out for him.
Many of the most compelling storylines in King of the Hill revolved around Bill’s underlying sadness, and the show often explored his personal struggles. Twenty-seven years ago today, on December 15, 1998, the episode “Pretty, Pretty Dresses” directly addressed Bill’s past abandonment by his ex-wife. The episode depicted him experiencing a significant emotional crisis, and with Hank’s support, he was able to recover. This all took place during the Christmas season, adding another layer to the story.
King of the Hill Broke Bill’s Brain 27 Years Ago Today
The King of the Hill episode “Pretty, Pretty Dresses,” which first aired during the show’s third season, hints at a difficult childhood for Bill. An earlier episode reveals Bill briefly mentioning his father forcing him to wear dresses as punishment, quietly repeating “Pretty, pretty dresses” to suggest his father enjoyed it. This episode then delves deeper into Bill’s past and fully explores these experiences.
Fans already knew Bill’s ex-wife had left him, but this episode finally revealed her name was Lenore. It turns out Christmas is the anniversary of when she left, explaining why Bill struggles so much every year. The episode puts Hank’s friendship with Bill to the test. Hank feels obligated to Bill because Bill once helped him during football in high school – a significant time for Hank – but it also shows that Bill is a consistent problem for his friends during the holidays.
This is when Bill really begins to struggle. He gets an iguana and surprisingly names it after his ex-wife, and admits he still buys her gifts hoping she’ll reciprocate. He also battles severe depression around this time of year, leading to several suicide attempts. His behavior has become so well-known throughout the neighborhood that it’s negatively impacting everyone else’s holidays.
How This Changes Christmas for King of the Hill

The episode takes a sadder turn when Bill reaches his lowest point. He starts dressing in his late wife Lenore’s clothes and even pretends to be Lenore, speaking in a higher voice. He continues this act for some time, even wearing a dress to the Hill’s Christmas party. Things nearly escalate when people become angry with him, but Hank has to pretend to be Lenore himself to bring Bill back to reality.
The King of the Hill Christmas episode was the most somber the show ever produced, and it was a turning point for Bill. He reached his lowest point in the series, a depth he thankfully never revisited. While Bill often struggled with sadness around the holidays – even becoming overly fixated on it in later episodes like ‘Twas the Nut Before Christmas’ – this episode presented a uniquely raw and intensely distressing portrayal of suicidal feelings, unlike anything seen before or since on the show.
While the episode is certainly somber, its Christmas spirit still shines through, and that’s a key reason why King of the Hill is so good. It offers a very honest portrayal of the holidays, acknowledging that they can bring up difficult feelings for some people. The episode doesn’t shy away from these emotions, and though it might not be your first choice for a King of the Hill Christmas re-watch, it’s a particularly meaningful and important special in the show’s history.
