Alongside classics like The Godfather and Goodfellas, Michael Mann’s Heat stands out as one of the greatest gangster films ever made, and it’s celebrating its 30th anniversary today. The film is an expansive, thrilling, and powerfully acted story with well-developed characters. There’s been talk for a while about a movie based on the novel Heat 2, and it now seems like that project is actually happening. But even if a sequel never materializes, the original Heat will always be a remarkably entertaining and endlessly rewatchable crime epic.
Bringing Heat 2 to the movies presents some challenges, especially when it comes to finding the right actors.
Why Does Casting Make Heat 2 Difficult?

This new novel primarily unfolds after the events of the original movie, focusing on two main timelines. A significant portion takes place between 1995 and 1996, immediately following the film Heat, with additional scenes set in 2000 and 1988. The story explores two key areas: the early lives of Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and Vincent Hanna, and Hanna’s ongoing pursuit of Shiherlis after having previously confronted McCauley.
Since Kilmer is no longer with us, the role of Shiherlis will need a new actor. Similarly, Al Pacino can no longer handle the physically demanding role of Hanna, and it wouldn’t be believable for him to look significantly different given that much of Heat 2 is set around the same time as the original film.
The main actors in Heat were perfectly cast, making it difficult to picture anyone else in those roles, though replacements are possible. Currently, Leonardo DiCaprio is the only confirmed cast member. This will be his first time collaborating with director Michael Mann, despite his extensive experience in crime films. It’s also his first sequel since Critters 3 in 1991.
It’s still unclear which character Leonardo DiCaprio will portray. Director Michael Mann notes that the role of Hanna, the older cop, requires an actor older than the one playing the robber, Shiherlis. While DiCaprio is being considered, he might not be the most obvious fit physically – someone like Adam Driver, who previously worked with Mann on Ferrari, could also be a good choice. Austin Butler, who bears a resemblance to Val Kilmer, is another long-time contender for the part.
There’s a possibility Adam Driver could play a younger version of McCauley, with Leonardo DiCaprio as Hanna – potentially using technology to make him look younger for scenes set in 1988 – and Gerard Butler as Shiherlis. Regardless of who plays which character, we’re hoping the Heat 2 movie is as successful as the book it’s based on.
