Jane Fonda Shares How Rob Reiner Acted on His Final Night Before Death

Jane Fonda has been rocked by the untimely deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner.

The Academy Award-winning actress revealed she had visited the couple at their Los Angeles home just a day before they were discovered deceased on December 14th.

Jane shared on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed healthy and happy. She added that she is now deeply saddened and in shock.

The 87-year-old fondly recalled Rob and Michele Reiner’s dedication to making a difference, describing them as wonderful, kind, intelligent, and humorous people who were always full of ideas for improving the world.

According to several reports, the Reiners were guests at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13th.

Around 3:40 p.m. the next day, police went to the Reiners’ home in the Brentwood area, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department. Once there, officers found two people who were later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

Police have confirmed that Robert and Michele Reiner were victims of homicide. The investigation showed their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was responsible for their deaths, according to an LAPD statement.

Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, appeared to have suffered stab wounds, a source told NBC News.

Police arrested Nick on suspicion of murder, the LAPD reported. While jail records first indicated a $4 million bail, officials now say he is being held without the possibility of bail.

TopMob News contacted Rob and Michele Reiner’s children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 27, for a statement about Nick’s arrest, but they haven’t responded. Following the deaths of Rob and Michele, the family previously told Variety they were deeply saddened by the loss.

As a longtime fan of the Reiner family, I was really saddened to hear about Nick’s arrest. TopMob News tried reaching out to Rob and Michele’s other children, Jake and Romy, for a statement, but they haven’t responded yet. The family did share a statement with Variety after Rob and Michele passed away, and it was just heartbreaking – they said they were completely devastated by the loss.

Tracy Reiner, Rob’s stepdaughter through his late wife Penny Marshall, was also stunned by the news. She told NBC News that she’d seen her father just a day before his murder.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, spoke openly about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which explored the topic of substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 17 times before turning 30. 

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted experiencing homelessness in three different states: Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described living on the streets for nights and even weeks at a time, stating it was a difficult experience.

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs. 

I remember hearing him talk about this on the Dopey podcast back in 2018, and it was pretty shocking. He said he spent ten rounds—meaning he was going at it for a long time—in his guest house after getting completely messed up on uppers. He thought it was cocaine, maybe mixed with something else, and it kept him awake for days. Eventually, he just started hitting things in the guest house, clearly losing it.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving unusually.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a police statement, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

Detectives with the Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy.

Rob and Michele Reiner did not die from illness or old age; they appear to have been stabbed, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke to NBC News.

According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were victims of homicide.

As a longtime follower of this case, it’s heartbreaking to learn the LAPD concluded that Rob and Michele’s son, Nick, was responsible for their deaths. What’s even more disturbing is that he wasn’t arrested until several hours after his parents were discovered – a delay I find incredibly unsettling.

Police announced they arrested Nick Reiner around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

TopMob News was not able to find a lawyer on file to speak on Nick Reiner’s behalf.  

After Rob’s death, Tracy said she’d seen her father the day before his passing. 

She told NBC News she felt incredibly lucky to have come from such a wonderful family. She was so surprised by everything, she said she didn’t know what to say and was still in shock.
