If you’re looking to boost your PC’s gaming performance, there are a few simple ways to optimize it.
PCs are usually ready to use right away, but a little extra setup can help everything run its best. That’s part of what makes owning a PC so enjoyable!
This short guide covers the first steps you can take to improve your computer’s performance for gaming.
Update Drivers

First, we suggest a simple step: update your graphics card drivers. These updates frequently add support for the latest games.
This results in improvements that help games run more smoothly! It’s also important to keep your drivers updated, as they include the newest bug fixes and performance enhancements.
This is particularly important for playing newly-released games. So, don’t ignore updating drivers.
Enable Game Mode

A quick and easy way to improve performance is to turn on Windows Game Mode. You can find this setting within the Gaming section of Windows Settings, or simply search for “Game Mode” in the Windows search bar.

It’s easy: just switch it on. Windows will then focus your computer’s resources on your games instead of apps running in the background, helping them run better.
Disable Unwanted Startup Apps

To start, open the Task Manager. You can do this by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing “Task Manager” from the menu, or by pressing the CTRL, SHIFT, and ESC keys at the same time.
Open Task Manager and click on the “Startup apps” tab. This displays a list of programs that automatically launch when your computer starts.
If you find something in the list you don’t need or use much, simply right-click on it and turn it off. This stops it from starting automatically, freeing up your computer’s resources for things like gaming!
After you apply the changes you want for this one, we recommend rebooting your PC.
Optimize Game Settings

How this works will vary depending on the game. However, it’s a good idea to check the graphics settings whenever you start playing a new game.
Many games don’t come with the best settings configured right away. Often, they’re set to the highest graphics options by default. Some of these settings don’t actually make a big difference in how the game looks, but they can significantly slow down performance.
Ultimately, the best settings will vary depending on the game, so you’ll need to look into it for each one. Luckily, you can usually find helpful guides online by searching for the game’s name along with “optimized settings.” We’ve even created a few ourselves, like our optimized settings guide for ARC Raiders!
Honestly, I’ve found the best way to enjoy games is to just mess around with the settings until everything looks and runs exactly how I like it. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where the graphics are beautiful but the game still runs smoothly – that’s what I always try for!
Try Overclocking

This technique is a bit advanced for this guide, but it can give experienced users a significant performance boost.
Overclocking means pushing your computer’s processor (CPU) and graphics card (GPU) to run faster than they’re normally designed to. It’s usually safe if you increase the speed gradually, but you’ll need to test it thoroughly to find settings that are reliable and work well with your system.
Overclocking results can vary quite a bit. Each computer handles it differently, and even identical machines can have different limits. Just because something works for someone else doesn’t guarantee it will work for you.
It takes a lot of patience and experimentation, but improving performance this way can be really satisfying.
If you’re interested in getting started, we strongly suggest finding some online resources about overclocking. A great place to begin is the r/overclocking Wiki – it’s designed for beginners.
However, this is quite a complex process, so it’s important to do thorough research and understand that you’re attempting it with your own responsibility.
Don’t Trust Scripts and Hacks Blindly

Finally, a quick word of caution: be careful when using online tools and scripts you find on the internet. Many promise quick and easy results, like instantly increasing your followers, but they can be risky.
Often, these scripts either don’t work at all or can actually cause problems with your system’s stability. We’re not saying they’re always useless, but we strongly advise caution when running them.
As a fan, I always think it’s best to just tweak the usual settings and stick with tools I already know and trust. Seriously, if you’re trying something new, please do a little research first – it can save you a lot of headaches!
Here are a few simple tips to help improve your PC’s performance for gaming. We hope this gives you a good place to start!
