Tomb Raider: Catalyst is a “Complete Adventure Top to Bottom” So Newcomers Don’t Feel Lost

The new Tomb Raider: Catalyst is a significant step forward for the series. Crystal Dynamics wants to ensure the game is accessible to both longtime fans and new players. During a Q&A session following The Game Awards 2025, studio head Scott Amos explained that the game is designed to appeal to everyone, as reported by GamesRadar.

Amos clarified that Tomb Raider: Catalyst will showcase Lara Croft at the peak of her adventuring experience. He explained that all previous Tomb Raider games represent events from her past. “For dedicated fans, this is a moment to see Lara at her most accomplished,” he stated. “This game reflects her current state, and everything we’ve seen before is her backstory.”

For new players, Amos explained that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is designed to be immediately accessible – you won’t need to know anything about previous games to enjoy it. He described it as a self-contained adventure, meaning you can easily follow the story and connect with Lara Croft even if you’re new to the series.

According to Amos, players can immediately start enjoying Catalyst’s story without needing any prior knowledge. He explained that the game is a complete, self-contained adventure, allowing players to understand the characters and plot right from the beginning – there’s no need to ‘do homework’ or learn about past events.

He emphasized that Tomb Raider: Catalyst will be the largest game Crystal Dynamics has ever created. He added that they are thrilled to share the experience with players.

Will Kerslake, the game director, had previously discussed Tomb Raider: Catalyst, explaining it would continue the story after Tomb Raider: Underworld (released in 2008). He also mentioned that the Tomb Raider trilogy from the 2010s would tell the story of how Lara Croft became the adventurer we know, within a new, connected timeline.

According to the developer, Tomb Raider: Catalyst takes place several years after Tomb Raider: Underworld. The earlier rebooted trilogy showed Lara Croft becoming the adventurer she is, so this new game features a more seasoned and experienced Lara.

According to Kerslake, new players won’t need to be familiar with the long history of Tomb Raider to enjoy the latest installment, Tomb Raider: Catalyst. He explained that this game is a fresh start for the series, designed to be accessible and fun for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. It’s meant to be a standalone adventure that anyone can pick up and enjoy.

A new Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2027. Before that, in 2026, players can look forward to a remake of the original game, called Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which will also be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
