The Writers Guild of America West recently indicated that the next Godzilla and Kong movie will feature Space Godzilla as the main villain. Space Godzilla, a powerful, dark version of Godzilla, originates from Toho, the company that created Godzilla. While Legendary Pictures hasn’t officially confirmed this, the Writers Guild’s acknowledgment of Toho’s ownership of the character strongly suggests Space Godzilla will be joining the MonsterVerse. This new threat appears to be significant enough to once again unite Godzilla and Kong.
What’s a Space Godzilla?
If you haven’t heard of Space Godzilla, here’s the story behind this unique villain. He first appeared in the 1994 film Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla and was created when some of Godzilla’s DNA traveled into space and merged with alien crystals. In the movie, Godzilla defeated his cosmic counterpart without any help from Kong, marking the last time this outer-space kaiju appeared in a film. While Space Godzilla has returned in video games, TV shows, books, and comics, he hasn’t been seen on the big screen since his first appearance.
Ever since the new Godzilla and Kong movie—titled Supernova—was announced, fans have been speculating about the possible appearance of Space Godzilla in the MonsterVerse. The film series has already reimagined popular monsters like Mechagodzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, so a fresh take on this alien threat would be exciting. While Supernova isn’t due out until March 26th, 2027, fans won’t have to wait that long for more monster action. The Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is returning next year, and the trailer suggests we’ll be seeing some brand new kaiju causing trouble.
