Rob Reiner, known for acting, producing, and directing, achieved great success with a series of popular films that many directors would admire.
Robert Reiner was born on March 6, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, to parents deeply involved in the entertainment industry. His father was a well-known comedian and writer, and his mother was an actor and singer. Given his family background – particularly his father Carl’s successful writing partnership with Mel Brooks on shows like ‘Your Show of Shows’ and ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show,’ as well as their iconic ‘2000 Year Old Man’ recordings – it’s no surprise Robert followed in their footsteps.
After the family relocated to Los Angeles, Rob Reiner, who had been active in his school’s drama club, began his television career at age 14 with a role in the series ‘Manhunt’. By his late teens, he was performing as a comedy duo with Larry Bishop in a San Francisco club. Simultaneously, he took on smaller acting roles in popular shows like ‘Batman’ and ‘The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour’. This acting work continued throughout the 1960s and 70s, culminating in a regular role on ‘All in the Family’, for which he won two Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a comedy.
In 1971, he married Penny Marshall, a former neighbor from the Bronx, but they divorced after ten years in 1981. He began directing in the mid-1970s, but his career truly took off in 1981 with the mockumentary ‘This is Spinal Tap,’ in which he also played the director, Marty Debergi, a parody of Martin Scorsese. The film followed a band on a disastrous tour and became a hugely influential comedy. This success led to a remarkable decade of critically acclaimed and popular films, including ‘The Sure Thing’ (1985), ‘Stand By Me,’ ‘The Princess Bride,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ ‘Misery,’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ (1992). He skillfully directed films spanning various genres – comedy, fantasy, drama, romantic comedy, and horror.
Rob Reiner’s film When Harry Met Sally drew inspiration from his own experiences with divorce. It was during filming that he met Michelle Singer, whom he married in 1989. Reiner also developed a strong and admired professional relationship with Stephen King, collaborating on the beloved coming-of-age film Stand by Me. That film includes a memorable line about friendship: ‘I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve.’
Rob Reiner earned King’s trust and managed many of his projects, including the film Misery, which won Kathy Bates an Academy Award. Reiner then founded his own production company, Castle Rock, which brought several of King’s novels to the big screen, like The Shawshank Redemption, Dolores Claiborne, and The Green Mile. He sold Castle Rock in 1993, as he preferred focusing on the creative aspects of filmmaking rather than the business side.
Following the success of A Few Good Men, Rob Reiner’s films didn’t achieve the same level of popularity. In 2015, he directed Being Charlie, a movie based on a personal script written by his son, Nick, who was struggling with his own difficulties, but it wasn’t well-received. By this time, Reiner was actively involved in politics, supporting the Democratic party and founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which successfully challenged California’s ban on same-sex marriage. There was even speculation he might run for governor of California against Arnold Schwarzenegger, but he decided against it. His later films, LBJ (2016) and Shock and Awe (2017), also failed to resonate with audiences. He also channeled his long-held fascination with the JFK assassination into a podcast exploring the question of who was responsible.
His last movie brought his career full circle, revisiting the same comedic style as his debut with a follow-up to ‘Spinal Tap.’ While it was a challenging act to follow the original, the sequel earned about half as much at the box office.
Reiner and his wife were at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien when reports surfaced of a fight between Reiner’s son and his father, leading to the son leaving. On December 14th, a staff member went to the Reiner’s home for a scheduled appointment but received no response. Reiner’s daughter, who lived close by, went to the house and found both of her parents dead from multiple stab wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, was later arrested and charged with their murder.
Rob Reiner was 78 years of age
