Jason Momoa will be playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie. Interestingly, Lobo was originally planned to star in his own film, to be directed by Michael Bay. Writer Jason Fuchs recently discussed the project on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, explaining that the film would have been extremely violent and edgy—much more so than Deadpool. According to Comic Book Movie, Fuchs believes this intensity was ultimately the reason the film never moved forward.
Later, Fuchs shared some specifics about the planned Lobo movie. He explained Michael Bay was attached to direct, and described the film’s tone as a blend of Guardians of the Galaxy and a Quentin Tarantino film. Fuchs also revealed a scene that would have been a parody of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, featuring a villain desperately pleading for his life by revealing his mother’s name is Martha. Lobo would respond that his mother is also named Martha, but would still kill the villain.
Fuchs shared that the movie was planned to include a Green Lantern, but not a well-known one from Earth. The character would have been Jack T. Chance, an alien Green Lantern. The film would also have introduced L.E.G.I.O.N., a team of alien superheroes, according to Fuchs.
I really enjoyed writing that script, which featured Green Lantern and a lot of other great DC characters. The relationship between Lobo and Jack T. Chance was particularly fun, and Jack T. Chance played a major role in the story. I also included a lot of elements from L.E.G.I.O.N. While it was definitely a Lobo story, I envisioned it as potentially the first in a series focused on L.E.G.I.O.N.
What Happened to Michael Bay’s Lobo?

DC Comics
Plans for a Lobo movie started back in 2009 with Guy Ritchie, the director of Sherlock Holmes, initially attached. However, Ritchie later shifted his focus to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Brad Peyton took over, even considering Dwayne Johnson for the main role. In 2016, Jason Fuchs, who contributed to the story of Wonder Woman, was brought on to write the script as part of the new DC Extended Universe. By February 2018, Michael Bay was a potential director, and the success of the Deadpool movies convinced Warner Bros. to actively pursue the Lobo project.
As a big movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by projects that almost happened. With Lobo, it seems Michael Bay was potentially involved at one point, though it wasn’t official. He came onboard shortly after the issues with Justice League, which was a weird time for the DC Universe. Warner Bros. was trying something new in early 2018 – they wanted more individual, director-focused DC movies instead of constantly building towards one huge team-up film. But things were unstable with the leadership at both DC and Warner Bros., and sadly, the Lobo movie just never came together.
Now that Jason Momoa is cast as Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie, the popular character is finally coming to the big screen and has potential for a significant role in the DC Universe. There’s been talk that Lobo might appear in the next Superman film, Man of Tomorrow, and fans are hoping for even more – a standalone Lobo movie or a special on HBO Max, perhaps based on Lobo’s Paramilitary Christmas Special. Producer Peter Fuchs has expressed his desire to see a Lobo movie happen, even if it’s not the story he originally wrote, stating:
I’m confident we’ll eventually see a Lobo movie happen, even if it’s not exactly the version I had in mind. It’s just that Lobo is such a fantastic character, it feels inevitable.
