So, Hasbro is really doubling down on making video games based on their big franchises, like Dungeons & Dragons. They just brought on Paul Della Bitta – he used to be at Blizzard and co-founded Dreamhaven – to head up their digital games division at Wizards of the Coast. Basically, he’s going to be in charge of making those games, and he’ll be reporting directly to the president of Wizards of the Coast, John Hight. Sounds like things are getting serious for D&D in the gaming world!
With the arrival of new hire Bitta, James Ohlen, a co-founder of the studio behind the game Exodus, is leaving his leadership role. According to Hasbro, Ohlen felt he had completed his work and wanted to transition leadership to the rest of the team. He’s also expressed a desire to focus more on creative work for tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast.
According to Hodes, James believed he had finished his work on the game and was confident the team would handle the final refinements and adjustments.
Following the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023, Hasbro is looking to expand its presence in the video game market. While games based on Wizards of the Coast properties (like Dungeons & Dragons) have existed before, Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved sales numbers never seen before in that category. As a result, Hasbro has recently announced partnerships with several game developers to create new titles.
Although several upcoming games are planned within the Dungeons & Dragons world – including the new Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons and another project from Giant Skull studio – Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro are also working on games outside of those established franchises. A major game currently in development, called Exodus, isn’t connected to either Dungeons & Dragons or Magic: The Gathering.
I’ve been following Exodus for ages, and I was so excited to finally see the new trailer at The Game Awards 2025! The developers have talked about what inspired them, and it’s a really cool mix – they’re drawing from games like Mass Effect, Horizon, and even Metroid Prime. It sounds like it’s going to be something special!
Regarding the name ‘Giant Skull,’ Larian Studios’ Michael Douse had previously stated in August that while another Baldur’s Gate game could happen someday, Asmussen’s team is currently focused on a different, unnamed project.
According to Hight, Baldur’s Gate is a fantastic game, and a sequel is planned. However, this new project isn’t a direct follow-up to Baldur’s Gate. Instead, they’re working with Stig Asmussen and his team to create a compelling story and introduce Dungeons & Dragons to a wider audience. They hope the game will resonate with D&D fans by bringing their imaginations to life, but also attract players who enjoy action games like Jedi and God of War.
As Stig pointed out, Dungeons & Dragons is a game for absolutely everyone, a true creative playground. Hundreds of millions of people already know about or have played it, and we’re committed to keeping it popular for another 50 years.
