The original Power Rangers story arc, which lasted five years, concluded in 1999 with a particularly strong season. Starting in 1993, Power Rangers brought the Japanese Super Sentai series to Western audiences, telling the story of five teenagers from Angel Grove who transformed into armored superheroes. They fought magical monsters and protected the world from Rita Repulsa. While there have been many different Power Rangers teams over the last 32 years, many fans consider those early seasons to be the best.
Starting with Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue in the 2000s, each season of Power Rangers featured a completely new team with its own story. However, the first five seasons – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, Power Rangers in Space, and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy – were all part of one continuous story. These seasons, which aired from 1993 to 1999, followed the same characters as they gained new powers, upgraded their Zords, and battled different villains. The era concluded with a fantastic three-part finale for Power Rangers Lost Galaxy on December 18, 1999.
Why Power Rangers’ First Five Years Were the Franchise’s Best
Before the show made a big change with Lightspeed Rescue, the first seven seasons of Power Rangers had a fantastic, continuous story arc spanning five years. It all began in 1993 with Jason Lee Scott, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Trini Kwan, and Billy Cranston as the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, who battled villains like Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and Rito Revolto for three seasons. This same core team continued to evolve through Zeo, Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space, with members leaving and choosing their successors, all while following the same overarching storyline for several years.
The show created a strong sense of ongoing history and lasting appeal for the Power Rangers franchise. We were given ample opportunity to connect with each team and understand why characters changed, and those changes felt natural within the story. Even when the series took the Rangers to space in 1998 to rescue Zordon, becoming the Space Rangers, it all remained consistent. In Space came close to ending the central storyline with Zordon’s sacrifice and the Rangers returning to Earth, but Lost Galaxy reintroduced Karone, formerly the villain Astronema from In Space, after she was restored to her human form.
Karone transformed into the Pink Galaxy Ranger after Kendrix bravely sacrificed herself while fighting the Psycho Rangers in Power Rangers in Space. This completed Karone’s journey from villain to hero, and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy became the last installment of the original Power Rangers series, concluding the show’s run in the 20th century. The series finale, which aired on December 18, 1999, saw the Galaxy Rangers rescue human colonists from the villain Trakeena and travel to the planet Mirinoi. There, they returned the Quasar Swords – the source of their powers – to their sacred altar, restoring the planet and even bringing Kendrix back to life, providing a truly fulfilling ending to this era of Power Rangers.
